hey guys, have a big problem with my wrangler. today as i was on the highway making my 3 hour trip back from salisbury, my engine would rev up in 5th gear when given any gas, but not accelerate. the same would happen in 4th. then an hour later 3rd, 2nd, and 1st. accelerating from a stop in 2wd now feels like 4L (engine would rev, but accelerate slooooow). what could be the issue? thanks.

it could just be a worn out clutch. only way to know is look at it.

750 actually isn't so bad. Labor rates are pretty high and thats a good price. Don't even bother calling the dealer. They wont be able to touch 750.

I would put my money on the clutch just being worn out rather than fluid leaking on it. The clutch is a wear & tear part..they eventually need to be replaced.

youre right. i was on hold for 10 minutes and just got the parts prices. 410 for clutch and 110 for throwout bearing. didnt even ask for the labor....

I nearly got ill when I saw what pricing you were quoted. :eek:

Your Jeep came from the factory with a Luk clutch. You can get the entire Luk clutch kit which includes the factory clutch disk, pressure plate, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, and pilot shaft for $159 from Dial-A-Clutch - Your LuK Clutch Kit Specialist which is where I bought mine from. It arrived 3 days after ordering it. For $159, you get the same clutch the factory installed which is a superb quality clutch that can make it past 200K miles. I pulled mine at 160K miles out of concern and it still had a lot of life left on it.

Any good shop can swap the clutch in 3-4 hours so add another $320 in labor at a typical $80/hour at the most.

wow. thats cheap. i was thinking i would do it myself, but my dad (having replaced clutches before) advised against it. i need it tomorrow morning for work and i dont have the proper tools to pull the transmission

So you'll have your Jeep back in time to go to work tomorrow morning if you just allow them to bend you over on that ridiculous clutch pricing they gave you? I'd catch a ride for a few days rather than allow myself to get raped by them.

750 was the original price from the shop (parts and labor). now is 870

There they go, screwing us again. Like we all have 870 laying around. Dealership quoted me 525 if I brought them the clutch. Might consider taking them the parts as they mark them up for more profit

All in all I would say thats a "normal" price considering the prices of labor could be anywhere from $80-$100 per hour. If I had to, I would guesstimate anywhere between 700-1000 for a clutch job at your typical mechanic shop.

Like I said before most shops will charge what the book says the job should take. If it takes them 3 hours and the book says its a 6 hour job, your getting charged for 6 hours. On top of that they will always bump up the price of parts. Thats why I hate going to shops. I do as much of the work as possible on my own.
