So on my 1yr JK anniversary I finally am itching to get my jeep out for a little ride. Something nice and easy for a first time wheeler. Everything I've read says this is a good place to go for that. Question is how about in the winter? Is it still worth the try? Its only about 20min away so I was thinking about hitting it this weekend if I can get the wife to either join me or find something else to do :).

I'm bone stock for now and as I said a first timer, so any other suggestion would be awesome. Thanks in advance

Went earlier this week and had a good time. If you know where to go there's some nice mud holes. Still have more areas to explore there. I will also be exploring Wharton soon

I’d love to take a cruise through Colliers Mills. My Dad used to take us there as kids but we always parked and walked. I k ow it’s a designated NJ Wildlife Management Area so my questions are to fellow Jeepers who have been to Colliers Mills recently.

1. Is there a Ranger Station Office where people must register to get permission to take their vehicles onto WMA roads and trails?
2. Are all the roads and trails open to four wheelers or are there designated four wheeler areas ?
3. Is it possible to just take a mild drive thru the area without running the risk of getting stuck in a ditch?

Sorry for the newbie questions. My Jeep is a stock Unlimited Sport and I don’t want to bust anything up, just do some mild four wheeling. Thanks in advance for any responses.

You will be able to do pretty my h anything you want with a stock rig. Read every sign you see. If it looks like you shouldn't be on a particular trail, get off. While there is a lot explore, there is also a lot of restricted areas. No check ins, just kind of drive around till you find a entrance off the main roads and have at it.

John,
I made it out to Colliers Mills today for my first visit. It was a great ride and just as you described. Just an exploratory run for now but I did take the opportunity to take one of the smaller branch roads where I found some of the mud holes that I’ve seen online. The nice thing is that you have options to take them full on, or just partially. Will be going back soon.

Glad you enjoyed.
As you get out more and more you find the areas to stay away from. If you get stopped, you went to far. Just be cool and they will let you off the hook. Especially if your not out there tearing stuff up. But the rangers are known to impound out there.

Hey guys I stopped down there on my off time looking just to see what Colliers was about. I went by Hawkins road and stated to the right went around the pond and came to a guard rail dead end. Is there more? I'm from Jackson and want to find some easy dirt roads to just get a little muddy.

I like continuing on Collier Mills Rd past where the have the NJ Outdoor Expo in the fall. It becomes a dirt road & you land up behind some school on 571.

The pictures in my previous post is where they were taken.

You can also take No. Stump Tavern Rd. Past the last bunch of houses, it looks like the road stops but continues on in sand. Last time I was there, I saw a couple of wild turkeys.

I approached and entered from East Colliers Mills Road onto Success Road. If you google map search Colliers Mills Dam, it will take you right to that entrance. From there, it goes on for miles with smaller roads branching out from the main road along the way. Tim

There is miles and miles of roads/trails in and around that area. Head down any one of the major roads and just turn off when you see an entrance.
Colliers mills is just one area. Jackson as a whole is littered with trails. Plenty of mud holes, just be careful they can be deceivingly deep especially after a good rain.

Took my JKU out to Colliers Mills the other day for a second time. Ventured deeper into the WMA and found lots of rugged conditions. The lakes are gigantic and look to be pristine. I bet they are loaded with fish. Mud holes abound if you are up to the challenge, or you can just skirt them if you want a less challenging ride. I got out and did some walking. I was disappointed to see that previous visitors have left trash in the form of bottles and cans on the ground in certain high visitor areas. There’s just no excuse for that kind of littering of such a wild and free natural resource. Next time I visit, I’m bringing a trash bag to clean up the debris left by the litters of the lake.

Yes the trash that is left there (and to a lesser extent, the pine barrens) is an embarrassment and makes all law abiding off road enthusiasts look bad. I think occasionally there are Jeep rides to clean all the crap up, if one of those gets set up I’d be down to help out

Hi John,
I was looking for a place to take my stock JL Rubicon. How can I get there? Is it free legal entrance or should I take a permission from local auth? Thanks.

Free & open to all. You'll be OK stock. Just stay off any roads if they are signed "No Trespassing" or like. I did not see any.
