I'm thinking about buying a 2006 Wrangler but I can't decide which model would be best for me. I don't plan to do any hardcore off-roading and I live in FL so I don't need it for snow. It would be my primary vehicle and I do mostly in town driving. I would like larger tires and wheels, for the look, so I don't think the 4 cylinder is wise because the additional wheel weight would dog out the smaller engine. I believe a lower end model with a v6 is a good place to start and I could customize the Jeep at my own pace and to my own liking. Would you all agree?

Do you ride with other folks?

Do you have kids?

If so; I'd look into a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

I sell Jeeps on the internet in Texas but if you like I can guide you through the process.

Are you going soft top, hard top or both?

Do you prefer automatic or six speed?

No kids.

Soft top.

I haven't decided on manual or auto yet.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Get a basic model, I'm not sure of the designations anymore and make your own improvements. You'll definately want the 6 cyl and you will have to decide for yourself on the tranny. I went with the manual and love it. I feel I have a little more power and more control over the vehicle. I ordered mine with the larger 30 inch tires and then promptly sold those and put some 31 inch MT/Rs. So if you know you're going to upgrade the tires and wheels then don't spend that money at the dealer. You could probably go with some BFG All Terrains that are good on road and still look good and can handle some dirt. 31 is the largest you can put on there without a lift. I also ordered mine with the fancy 7 speaker system and then replaced it all just recently. I'm never satisfied. :D Oh, and 4 wheel disk brakes come in handy as well.

I feel like i've been saying this a lot lately but go to Quadratec and sign up for thier free catalog. I use it as my wish book. So so many things in there that I NEED.

You could...

Get into a 2006 Rubicon with no extra goodies without breaking the bank.

It is one hack of a rig and you can build it up a bit at a time or run it stock for years.

What is your price point?

You can run larger tires just fine with the 4 cyl. If you plan on going over 31" tires (max size offered by the dealer) plan on buying a lift and regearing your axles.

I'd say an auto 4 cyl would be you best bet for you needs.

I only half agree with TJGreg, Get an automatic, but get the 6 cyl. No offense to the people with the 4cyl, but bigger is better.

Thanks for the input. I think the Wrangler X has enough on the base model to begin. I agree with amerijeep on the v6. I have an SUV with a v6 and I don't think I want to go back to 4 cyliners. The only dealer/factory upgrade would be a/c for the hot, rainy Florida afternoons. Thanks again everyone. I'll check out the local dealer this weekend. I'll post a pic and stay in touch if I drive away with one.

Cheers.

I was just keeping my opinion to myself when I said pitiful. I don't want to offend anyone with their Jeeps. I have issues with considering an Unlimited on the same plane of existence as a standard SWB Jeep. I'm not knocking it really. I just consider it to not be a true Jeep. Ya know all us Jeepers have our weird quirks.

Just wondering, amerijeep. I wasn't sure if it was something I said or not. I don't like the Unlimited myself. It just doesn't look right but I going to withhold judgement on it untill I see one perform offroad in person.

Sorry about that, and good point.
