Cooling fan(s) problem p0480

Earlier this year I would occasional get the p0480 code. Did all of the normal troubleshooting, wires, fuse, relay, etc. Reset the code and no problems until a few weeks or so later. Finally could not clear the code, took fan off and hooked red/black to battery and norhing. Ordered a new OEM fan online, installed and no problems for 3 months. Now exactly the same problem.

I know on the 2013+ there is a third wire, PDM. So this time I tried +/- from fan to battery and nothing, also jumpered that third wire to + and still nothing. I get 12v to the connector that goes to the fan.

Any ideas? I'm pretty sure a new fan/motor will get me going again. But having a second fan last just 3 months is either real bad luck or there is something else going on.

Any ideas are appreciated!

I ran into similar issues and lack of knowledge about the 2013+ JK cooling fan setup.

My fix was a simple one, but I don't know if yours was/will-be. Here is what I ran into:

This is an excerpt from some PDFs I found for my 2013 3.6.

It looks like either of the two should make it spin, and both will be the high speed.

Figured I'd save some people some time reading that blog post during a potential trail side crisis....

Just read through this guy's post and here's the TLDR to what he said sorted it out for him: Loose nut securing the fusible link for the fan to the battery.

To quote his post:

"So, what was it in my case? Shockingly simple: The 10mm nut holding the fusible link to the battery had worked itself loose. It was still touching, but it was not a tight fitting. As a result, I was testing the power to the fan with a multimeter and getting a solid 12-14 volts, but the connection was not reliable enough to provide the high amperage demands of the fan, so the fan was not running, and the code was being thrown. If I had to play nostradamus, I’d guess that months ago when I installed my stereo I managed to back this nut off some (likely on accident) and didn’t notice. It just finally worked itself loose with enough bumps and jerks to make the fan unhappy."

His blog post is very insightful for trouble shooting a problem with the "nextgen" fans on our Gen 2 JK's so click the link if double checking your battery connections aren't helping or you'd like to know more about how the system works. :)
