Well that's starting to get into the classic car realm of priceing ! A fully restored 1970 dodge challenger is gonna fetch almost twice what a 2013 will. It's all relative....
Craigslist outrageous
Okay I have been scoping out craigslist for jeep wranglers. One thing that amazes me is the asking price for some of them.Example 1982 6 cylinder 5spd trans ,4 inch lift kit ,36 inch tires, hard top and soft top,tube bumpers and asking 10,000 dollars. Seems unbelievable that some one can ask this for a 30 year old plus vehicle .No matter how much accessories it has and nice looking it is . I have done up a few 4x4 s in my past and you lose no matter what you have into it. Do people really buy them at prices like that ?

Jeep prices are all over the place and typically the owner thinks the Jeep is worth more than it is. The more into a Jeep the owner is, the more they are going to ask. The trick on CL is to keep checking often. Great deals come up on Jeeps but they quickly disappear as soon as they are up. By the way, you're right, if a Jeep owner wants to throw in a lot of upgrades, realistically he should feel lucky if he can get a 10-25% return on that investment.

It's hard to say what it's worth to someone. If its what you have been looking for and you are happy with the deal then it's great. I sold cars for awhile and I gotta tell ya, if you love it and your happy when you leave with what you want, it's a great deal. If you don't feel right about it and it stretches you too far too own it, or it's not just what you wanted, you will be unhappy.
I paid 13,000 for an 04 TJ Willys edition with a mild 2.5 in. Lift and 32's After market bumpers front and back, an 8000 lb Warn winch. Soft Top and perfectly clean in and out. 4.0 engine with an Auto trans. 34,000 original miles. Rust free. Was it a good deal ?

Some doofus had an 82 with a for sale sign at a car show here last weekend asking almost $20k for it. Wasn't even restored. No thanks, I could get a second Rubi LJ in mint condition for that money.
Jeeps and any other vehicle are worth what somebody is willing to pay for it. There are lots of people out there with more money than common sense
Correct ! Watch a Barrett Jackson auction sometime. It's worth what its worth to the buyer. But, it's also worth what its worth as an automobile in a blue book or a certain mechanical state to an normal person.

Prices can be crazy. Once you rebuild one and completely go through it let me know how much you have in it? That might answer why in some instances.
I sold my spotless 06 TJ, 75k miles, 6 speed, XRC bumpers, winch, 33 Duratracs, 2 inch BB, flat fenders, and a few more goodies for $15k a few weeks ago. Wranglers around here seem to be at a premium, even ones with well over 100k miles. Was looking at getting a used JKU but prices were outrageous, rigs with 60k + miles were going for a few thousand less than a brand new one. So that's what I did, bought a 2013.
I bought a very clean 06 TJ model X, 72K miles, Auto, A/C, Warn front bumper with 8,000lb winch, 4" lift, brand new 33" mud tires for $10,500 last fall. Was sitting on the side of the road for sale for 5-6 months. Prior owner started at $15,500 then came down every month it didn't sell. Looking at the Jeeps listed on Craigslist I thought it was okay at $15K. Was very happy waiting the few months for a much better deal. Take your time and look around and you'll find a good one at the right price.
call me cheap but i see basic hardtops for a yj on their for 4-500$ i know times are tough but ill spend 300 and get the top + doors at a junkyard...

ive never seen a wrangler in a junkyard, it just dosnt happen
they get turned into trail rigs or parted out and crushed
CJ7s are high and have been for awhile, unless you find one with a 4 cylinder. A lot of 4 cylinders have had engine swaps though.
YJs are the best buy right now. I'll probably get one or a CJ5 as a project soon.
The high priced, built up units are sometimes good buys, since you couldn't build them for the sale price.
However, people see a nice one on CL and get the bright idea that the POS under a tarp in their backyard is worth that too.

Okay guys got me a 88 yj 4.6 6cylinder auto. Needs frame repair drivers side rear shackle gonna get me saftcap to fix it ,little rust hole drivers side at door,rust starting at top of passenger fender .Has new battery and alternator ,tires like really new condition but gonna have to get spare wheel and tire .Rides and shifts real well ,paint on hood flaked .
My best idea is I dont have to worry about a check engine light LOL.
Gonna be doing mods to it as I go along .The seller originally asked 2700 but dropped it to 2400 before I went to look at it telling me because of rear shackle area. I feel as thou I got a decent deal

As someone said, "It's worth what it's worth to the buyer!" and that's at *that* moment, on *that* day...Most I paid for a Jeep was 17k for a 98 Sahara, that was back in July, 2000. Was looking for another Jeep, fell in love with it! But...frame rotted right out from under me! Sold her in 2011 for $3k...bought Jeep #8 about 1.5 yrs ago, 2002 TJ "X", for $6K...great deal! Great shape, 129K miles, 6cyl, auto. Looks like the top was never even lowered! One thing is for SURE: I will NEVER pay more then $10k for a Jeep again! No matter how much you love it: It's a depreciating asset, at BEST! It will be a LOOONNNG time before a TJ is worth what a CJ-5/7 is worth in mint condition. But...I love the TJ and will drive 'em as long as they are available. These folks who are paying $30k+ for a Jeep nowadays are, to me, just plain CRAZY!! Paying $500+ a month for a vehicle, of any kind, is just plain stupid! Specially if you actually wheel it! But...to each their own....
