Dana 30 is a light duty front axle used in Jeeps. It's strong enough to handle daily street use and light off roading. It can be upgraded but only so far.

Dana 35 is a rear axle that started life as the AMC 15. It was used in AMC passenger cars into the 80s. It also was used as a rear axle in the YJ and TJ wranglers. It too is a light duty axle like the Dana 30. It can be upgraded but only so far.

There is no dana 40. You're thinking of the Dana 44. It's a medium duty axle that has been used as both a front and rear axle over the years.

As a front axle, it was used in 1/2 and 3/4 ton pickup trucks made by every domestic truck manufacturer at one time or another. The Rubicon model Wrangler uses a hybrid axle that takes some parts from a Dana 44 and some from the Dana 30. The 44 is a good solid axle with a long history. It's a common upgrade for Jeeps to give you the ability to handle much larger tires.

As a rear axle, the Dana 44 was used in 1/2 ton pickups by almost every domestic manufacturer at one point or another. It was the standard rear axle for a little while in the CJ series of Jeeps when they weren't using the AMC20 in the 70's and early 80's. It was an option on the TJ wrangler and standard on the LJ. It's the standard rear axle on the JK. It also has a long history of being a rear axle for a number of RWD passenger cars. It's a strong axle (within reason) that has an incredible number of parts and upgrades available for it.

The Dana 60 is a heavier duty axle that is used as both a front and rear axle. As a front axle, it is used in 3/4 ton diesel applicaitons as well as being basically standard in the 1 ton pickups. As a rear axle it has been used in 3/4 ton pickups and a few 1 ton pickups. Though 1 ton pickups will typically use an even bigger and stronger rear axle. The Dana 60 was also used by Dodge in the 60's muscle cars to handle the torque of the Hemi and 440. It is a big axle that can handle a lot of power and weight.

The only thing I can add is a 60 front and a 60 rear have nothing in common other than the carrier name. The rear is barely stronger than a 9 inch ford, but the front is about as strong as it gets as far as factory ones go. I could write 14 paragraphs about the differences in 60's lol

yeah there are quite a few people that said they want(or wish they had) Dana 60 both front and rear axles but I didn't know why. At least now I understand why they would want it.

Yeah, I oversimplified things to fit it into a chapter worth of text. If I start getting into the details people's eyes glaze over.

Yeah IMO a 60 rear is a paperweight....I have thrown at least 40 of them away in my life. But a 60 front.....make me happy :D
It's still a step up from the AMC20 that I pulled out from under my J10. While the FSJ AMC20 is heavier duty than the CJ version, the full float D60 out of a J20 is a step up, especially when you do the disc brake conversion using the ElDorado calipers. And when you're towing a CJ on a trailer, it never hurts to have as much as you can in the brakes. I also swapped in the front D44 to match the 8 lug pattern and I was able to swap in the Chevy JB7 heavy duty front brakes onto it at the same time. That J10 really likes to stop when I tell it to now. :D

Dana 41 in some Willys Jeeps

Dana 25front axle, *Dana 27 closed knukles non disc brakes *Some Jeeps and Scouts used them as the rear also.
