BREAKING NEWS: DBBB Map Now Available on CartoTracks!!

The Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway is located in in the Red River Gorge area of Kentucky. Centered around Slade, KY, the DBBB was made possible through support from local counties, Southern Four Wheel Drive Association, and Ohio River Four Wheelers. Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway also deserves credit for it's establishment as a recognized, legal route. Remember to tread lightly and always respect land owners and their property.

Download the free app, PDF Maps by Avenza first and then visit our site's map library to download the map. Don't get lost and stay on the trail!

I did a bit of this trail last week. All in all it is a great experience. I want to make a few points though as there is always room for improvement.

1. I downloaded and used the CartoTracks maps. it is very helpful to let me know where I was. However being used to a gps navigation system, the response and zoom level were a bit too zoomed out. I made a few wrong turns and it wasn't really clear for a few minutes. I didn't mind as much as I was concerned that I was trespassing.

2. I started out from hwy 11 and turned onto Chop Chestnut road. Ended up in a rock quarry. Using the map, it really looked like I was doing good, but kept getting dirty looks from those huge quarry dump trucks. After making a few wrong turns, I was convinced that the trail headed down a trail with a sign at the entrance "Danger Blasting. Do Not Enter". So I gave up and tried going on the trail the other direction.

3. Headed up toward Little North Fork Road. This went much better. I really enjoyed the trail. Beautiful scenery. I guess it rained the night before as the trail was very wet. Even so, not really deep muddy. I know that this is just newly opened, but a recommendation is to add some arrows or markers at intersections. Once again I want to respect other peoples property and I wondered off the trail a few times before realizing it.

I made a little video of the trip. It is a little pixalted due to the small file size, but you should get a good idea of the trails beauty. A few creek crossing the road and a few creek is the road. I definately would like to come back and explore more.

@Dr Obbins

Thanks for the write up and the video. This looks like my type of off-roading. More overland style and not rockcrawling or "mudding". A couple of guys from the Knoxville Jeep club are discussing a weekend trip up and around and your video will help me convince them it's worth the drive!

I went back in late July and really enjoy the trails. I still haven't been on all of it yet. There is always next vacation.

I stayed at Natural Bridge park, the bath house needs renovation, but other than that it was OK. If you have the time, the hike to the natural bridge is well worth it.

It is scenic, fun to drive, couple of challenges, but nothing too hard. Download the map and maybe bring some type a of a saw. We almost had to turn around due to a downed tree, but eventually climbed over it.

Thanks for the update! I'm looking forward to the trek. I like hiking and I know a couple members of my party are willing to hike a little to check out great scenery.

Can all of the DBBB be done in a stock Rubicon?

How long should it take to do the entire trail?

Can you camp along the trail?

How experienced do you need to be to do this trail?

Thanks in advance!

Can all of the DBBB be done in a stock Rubicon? I haven't been on the entire trail yet, but what I have seen - yes (weather permitting) They advertise 1/3 paved (beautiful scenery), 1/3 gravel & 1/3 moderate trail. There is one section thay have labeled "extreme" that I turned around due to being by myself and on a schedule.

How long should it take to do the entire trail? It depends on your driving and how much you stop. They state that is over 100 miles. I have been in the area twice for over a day each and repeated some areas and haven't been on others

Can you camp along the trail? - No, but there are plenty of campsites in the area.

How experienced do you need to be to do this trail? A beginner in a Rubi should be OK as long as your with someone. Check out this video for a taste of the creek section. https://vimeo.com/167362579
