I decided earlier this week to remove the powder coat from my wheels. I originally bought black wheels because I hated polishing aluminum and the brake dust build up would blend in with a black wheel. I got bored of the black though.

I started with this.


Now I'm at this.



I still need to polish a lot and remove some small spots of paint and then seal them up. Then I'll have to either paint my centercaps aluminum color or buy some new ones.

If the jeeps black the center caps would do great staying in black even with the rims aluminum
Not a bad idea to try first. I went out and put the caps back on for now. What do you think?

As slow as this whole process is going t be, I'll leave them black for a while I guess. It took about 2 hours using stripper to get the powder coating off to where it is and there's still some to remove. I'm thinking of just letting the rest wear off over time with cleaning and polishes. The stick on tire weights came off too so it'll need rebalancing. I haven't figured out why some of the coating comes off so easy and other spots are a pain.

i think that looks great.if i keep my rubicon im probably going to get rid of the moabs and get a set of those.

Thats going to look great didnt notice you have a black jeep keep the caps black you will be happy with it i wonder if you could take a buffer and some compound to give them a real good shine/ get the little bit of black off

Well, this project is now dead in the water. I went to do a second wheel today and it is turning out much different than the first. The wheel I worked on today didn't take as well to the paint stripper and where it did there are some very deep machining marks from the manufacturer. I don't have the time or patience to work on polishing those out. So I'll be repainting them black.



This was the first one I started. If they all looked like this, I could deal with them until I got around to removing some of the stray spots.


I'd like to get some beadlocks eventually but I have other stuff I want to do to my Jeep first. The 1k it'll cost for some nice alloy beadlocks, I could do much more to make my rig more trail worthy. As long as these Duratracs are lasting me, I should be ready to jump up to 35s by then with the brake and steering upgrades as well as front/rear lockers with regear.
