Hey, first - I've been perusing off and on the last couple of months and eally appreciate the contributors' feedback here.

I'm about 6-8 months out from getting a JLU. Got rid of my Wrangler about 20 years ago and rented a JLU in Cali this summer for vacation. Fell in love all over again.

In order not to repeat my mistakes buying last time, I'm wanting to buy a nearly base model and make mods after (not a whole lot). The one thing that doesn't seem very economical so far is an aftermarket hardtop (I won't be installing, not capable thataway).

Is it very common for a dealer to install an OEM hardtop?

Welcome to the forum :drinks:

The jeep will arrive "hardtop ready" Nothing to do but remove the softtop and door surrounds, bolt down the back of the hardtop and fasten in the freedom panels.

Probably cheaper to order it with the dual top group if you want both tops.

The Premium Twill is FAR AND ABOVE better than the Sailcloth tops of yesteryear were.
If you are in an area that doesn't freeze regularly just the Twill should do ya.

The hard-top will cost you about twice as much if you don't get it with the Jeep. If you want a hard-top, just get one with it already installed.
Trying to avoid paying for all the other, extra equipment that always seems to come with one with a hardtop already installed. Maybe dealers won't do it for just this reason. I dunno.

Possibly, but road noise was one of the main reasons I got rid of the Wrangler 20 years ago (planning to install or have installed a headliner). Plus, it's warmer. And - just my opinion - but I think it looks a good bit better with a hardtop. It was also really nice with the rental just to be able to take off the driver passenger cover and toot sweet at that.

I ordered one 4 weeks ago exactly how I want it.

btw - the headliners from the factory cost the same as aftermarket, I put them in myself on my current JK and am letting the factory do it with this Jeep.

I'll check. Last time I ever did a build, it was several thousand more than I've been able to find at 1 or 2 dealerships nationwide (unless those were bait-n-switch or some other deception...who woulda thunk it with a dealer).

The above info is incorrect, unfortunately..

Any lets say JK or JL Wrangler that leaves/left the factory with a soft top only, does not have all that is needed in regard to down the road installing an OEM hardtop.

With that said no, it is not "hardtop ready"

Along with the hard top the JL owner will need to buy the Jeep Wrangler Hardtop Wiring Conversion Kit for JL (I believe it is kit 82215312AB) and have that installed. This kit gives you rear washer ability and rear defrost on the hard top. Kit with install of same will cost $250+-.

Only if you want that fancy wiper thing. Most can get by without it since you don't have it on the softtop.

if you want hard top, do it the right way and get it from factory build, then you have it covered under warranty for leaks, no messing around with wiper harness, etc. You can always get an after market soft top down the ride if you want, or go for the dual top option.

Bought my '17 as a hardtop, 2 months later added the soft.
Living in Maine I switch to hard top the end of October till Marchish.

Unlike the JK I think the JL requires some overhead brackets that the freedom panels latch to. If you buy used make sure to get these brackets from the seller or buy them elsewhere.

As billarf says, only Jeeps that are built with the hard top or dual top group come fully equipped for the hard top (with wiring harness for rear defroster and plumbing for rear washer). If you are going to want both tops down the road, you’re better off either ordering the dual top group or starting with the Freedom Top and adding soft top later. If you can’t find a Freedom Top model equipped the way you want nearby, you can always order to your liking.

I ordered mine with the dual top group. That is probably one of the best options you can pick on an ordered Wrangler. With the dual top group you get the Mopar Premium soft top which is just terrific. As mentioned above if you Jeep did not come from the factory with a hard top you will also have to pay for the electronic bundle to get it wired up right. I did that on my last Jeep and it was not cheap.

Thanks everyone. Don't really foresee a need for a soft top unless it's a bikini (assuming there's still such a thing) and doubt I'd get one anytime soon, if at all.

Lemme restate...at a dealer, I've found a new 2019 (no hardtop and no options except all-weather floormats) for $27k. The same build with a hardtop on jeep.com costs $34k. With a factory order, is negotiation, incentives and/or a group buy program likely gonna get me to something like $28.5?

The dealer may be offering the one on the lot below the suggested retail price. The Jeep website will show you only suggested retail price.

Best bet is to go to the dealer(s) nearby and talk about ordering a Jeep the way you want it. See what they will do for you.

If I wanted the Jeep you do, I wouldn't hesitate to order it with the hard top. I'd also order the insulation panels they offer. That cuts down on noise and helps keep the temperatures where you want them. They may be a little more expensive but the convenience of having them when the Jeep shows up, to me, is worth it.

If you ever decide you want to do a soft top, there are tons of options. The bikinis are "strapless" these days. With the roll bars the way they are, they just attach to the roll bar all the way around. They aren't like the old CJ/YJ style where they had long straps running to the back of the tub. Bestop is probably the #1 go-to brand but if you go to a Jeep parts company like Quadratec you can find all kinds of tops to choose from.

I'm learning an expensive lesson but would interested in some feedback. I bought a 2018 JLU with a soft top. Experience with my 2001 Wrangler dual top prompted me to purchase a hardtop (from the dealer). After 3 trips to the dealer, the hardtop still leaks. The service rep said that 90% of jeep hardtops leak (even brand new ones with factory installed hardtops). I find this hard to believe. Any comments / suggestions welcomed and appreciated.

Your service rep sounds ridiculous, I can only speak for my “n” of 2 hard tops on 2 different Jeeps, but I’ve never had a leak and neither have any of my friends with Jeeps.

If 90% of them leaked every other forum thread would be about leaking tops.

I added a hard top.

You have to purchase and install the tabs for latching the freedom panel to the jeep. The hardtop wiring kit is not a necessity but does give you the defrost, wash fluid, and wiper functionality.
