Whats up,
So I joined the forum trying to find some answers. I have a 99 TJ 4.0 Sport and about three months ago I ended up sinking my jeep at my own birthday party...lol. Water was half way up the spare tire. Checked engine oil and no water found its way in. However, since then it has been running incredibly rough. Havent drove a whole lot since then mainly to and from work being my only mode of transportation (genius i know). MIL light has been on ever since. Running "higher than normal" oil pressure and sounds like it has a major problem with fuel/air mix and or firing. Had to replace intake/exhaust gasket and got some codes from oriley's that informed me of bad O2 sensors (changed upstream). Still running rough. Previously the computer was reading that it was running lean but you could smell that it was dumping fuel to try and compensate without success and was getting a whopping 5-7 MPG. mileage is better since new gasket and O2 sensor but still runs rough. The exhaust sounds like it has a deep echo at idle and gets worse with acceleration. Power has suffered a huge loss. Check engine light has recently started flashing from time to time. I dont have the cash to go to the dealer no the confidence in the local mechanics around here. If anyone has any suggestions or tips they would be greatly appreciated. Trying to do all the repairs myself just have run out of ideas on things to try. Im getting it hooked up to a code reader at work tomorrow so maybe i can find something out with that. Sorry it was such a long post but this is driving me insane :banghead:...lol. Hope it doesnt come down to it but ill drive it till it blows :firedevil: then drop a new motor in...lol.

Thanks!

your 99 has a distributor? maybe a new cap and rotor. the old one was probably filled with water when you drove in the water.
flashing CEL means misfiring.

1st thing i'd check/change would be cap, rotor, wires and plugs. electrical and water usually don't mix too well. at the least i'd clean cap/rotor(ignition file/emerory cloth) and clean/regap plugs

You need to have the code read to determine what the problem is. Your 99 needs a reader for the code. Autozone and othe places will read it for free.

Hey guys,
No help with the code reader...the guys wouldnt pick up anything when he plugged it in. However, I went ahead and threw some new plugs in it and found that the third and fourth cylinder from the front of the motor were fouled to the point where they wouldnt fire. so problem solved. thanks for all the advice and suggestions. Im sure my check engine light is still do to the downstream O2 sensor...the only thing i havent replaced yet but its coming this weekend.

Last time I played submariner with my jeep I cracked the distributer cap. You might want to change that anyways.

i did almost the exact same thing to my jeep. its been sitting a lot cuz i drive my other car to school and work but to fix it running rough and sputtering i replaced the tps and it smoothed out great. the only problem now is its running rich( the code says lean, but you can see the black building up on my exhaust tip) lacking power as well. i cleaned my O2 sensors but it still has the code, i was told it could be a vacum hose loose but i cant find one or it could be the MAP. does that make sense as a problem to you guys

You probably need to replace the upstream O2 sensor and put new plugs in it...this fixed mine.

No i have the AX-15 manual 5spd. Well Unfortunately I do not have any pictures because my phone (moto DROID) was plugged in to my stereo head unit and sitting "safely" under the e-brake handle, or so I thought. Some of my friends and myself like going to the creek where we used to ride four wheelers all the time and have bon-fires alot and drink serveral beers. This being what we did for my birthday you could say I was having a "great" time...lol. Then I had the bright idea of taking a joy ride through the creek. Next thing i know i was in a pretty good sized crossing and stopped moving forward...in my miller light induced state of mind i tried backing out...then rocking out...this in turn caused me to dig down untill i framed out and had water on the bottom of my seats. (there goes the 400 dollar phone) We ended up leaving it there till the next day when my buddies and i pulled it out with a sport trac and a come along.

^ Thanks for sharing. That could have happened to me numerous times when I was younger but by the grace of God it didn't :D. Glad the Jeep's O.K. :)

have to search for it but, somewhere out here in the forum is a complete list of everything you need to do after sinking your jeep.

x2 on the spark plugs, glad that fixed it. People always forget that spark plugs are made to fail and should be changed more frequently... Glad you tried it.
