I have a 2008 JK 4-door.

I just changes my axle fluid and I bought 4 quarts of the Royal Purple as every website says to.

My axles didn't take as much as other say it will.

I only used total for both axles 3 quarts.
Project JK says: The Front differential only needs 2.7 pints (1.35 quarts) and the rear only needs 4.75 pints (2.375 quarts).

Is this normal?

Mine took a shade under 3 quarts doing both front and rear. I used valvoline syn 85-140 as I may tow a lawn mower or something someday! I just used the drain plugs and did not pull the covers as they don't leak and if if ain't broke no need to fix it!

If your fluid is contaminated, then you will need to pull the covers in order to fully drain them. If it's just a routine maintenance change, then using the drain plug should be fine.
