Hey Everybody,

New to the board. It's good to see I'm not the only Jeep nut.

Traded in the old Towncar for my jeep - I have not regreted one minute since. Wife calls it my mid-life crisis........hey it's cheaper than a girl friend!

But, I do have one annoying problem. Shifting from 3rd to 2nd is sometimes just short of impossible. kicking up the rpm's usually solves the problem. I already replaced the hydrolics, but that didn't solve the problem. It is not constantly a problem, but it does seem to be getting worst.

Also, I have to let the clutch pedal almost all the way out before it engages......is that normal?

oh...almost forgot. 2000 sport w/ 4.0

How many miles are on it?

Have you changed the transmission fluid?

If your 2-3 shift is the only one that is giving you trouble, it sounds like the syncros are going out on that shift... Especially if matching the engine RPM to the trans works... Used to be an issue with Jeep manual tranmissions, but I know at some point they fixed it, just not sure which year. Unfortunately, if that really is the issue, you will need a rebuild on your transmission...:(

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. It only has 35k miles on it!

Do you think changing the gear ube would help??

Can't hurt. Cheap bandaid for the time being...

Try changing the transmission oil to Redline 90 GL4 rating. It could just be needing some fresh oil. Redline has one of the best characteristics out there, especially for brass synchro's. That would be the first step before rebuilding the tranny.

Thanks for your input.

What about the pedal....I have to let it all the way out for it to engage, is that normal???

Or did the prevoius owner wear the clutch plate down in so few miles:eek:

I'm not too sure about the pedal but I second Redline MT-90! Best out there.

Hard to tell how badly one uses, abuses, a clutch. Make sure your reservoir is full for the hydraulic clutch. If it is full, and no leaks, you may need a new clutch. I have seen the slave cylinders go out before 30k miles. Easy way to check is to have someone look at it when depressing the clutch several times, while engine is running. If it is bad, you will see fluid leaking out. You can also check under the Jeep after sitting all night, to see if there are any wet spots on the ground. If there are no problems with the slave unit, it would then need a new clutch. I bet the previous owner traded that in for an automatic. If he, she, wore the clutch out that fast, he, she, needs to drive a automatic.

The clutch and gear lube suggestions are good but first, does your TJ have a body lift installed? If so, how tall is it?
