Having broken off the third turn signal lever in less than 90 days on my new to me yj, i have decided not to repair the factory flaw. The weakest lever I have ever seen.

Has anyone else given up and made their own solution? I am thinking motorcycle style switches on the wheel. For the wipers, some way to bypass the current system and use the three position toggle that is by the drivers right knee in the group of three toggles. I understand they were for wipers and defrosters for the hard top, however that is long gone.

Would love to hear ideas others have come up with.

Broke mine 3 times durning the summer from jumping in to the drivers seat. I learned the easiest way to fix it is to drill a small hole in the broken nub and screw a small screw into it and pull it out and push the new turn signal leaver in. I don't think its practical to do what you want to do, sounds like cool idea but you would have to find some way for the wire to travel with out binding when you turn the wheel.

My thinking was do it race car style with the wire wrapped around the column. This time, I cant get it drilled out and i tool the wheel off and took it down to the removal of the signal plastic parts in the wheel, but still could not reach the part the lever snaps into. I could not see how trying to get the column cover off would help as it appears the holder for the signal parts would have to come out some how before the column cover could come out. I could not find anything about how to get them out anywhere. Tired of the headaches. This is probably the worst engineered piece I have ever seen, and I have owned Fiats!

Are you breaking them off with your knee or something? I have noticed if your not careful you will hit the stalk getting in. I am going to start tilting my wheel full up and see if that helps. I just rebuilt my whole column so I know its a PITA when it breaks off. The stalk end actually rides in the wiper switch which serves as the actuator for the turns and the hi beam as well. It is held onto the upper column shroud with a pivot pin for the hi beams and connected with a short metal piece to the turn signal. The signal switch looks just like the older ones and you may be able to use the old fashion stalk if you move the wipers to the switch your talking about and put an old style floor dimmer switch in. Fix it or mod it, its gonna be a lot of work either way.

My question is why do they put that grove in the metal rod at the end ?
Seems to me that's the weak point, and I can't see it serves a purpose.
Maybe just weld that groove and smooth it out to strengthen it.

Welding it won't work. When you heat up the steel with the weld it changes its molecular construction and it becomes brittle on either side of where its welded. So, if you weld the groove, it will just break on the outer edge of the weld.

The wipers will be easy. Highbeams, easy. The hard part to figure out is the turn signals.

I was looking at Summit Racing's steering column which appears to be different. I am going to call them and talk to them about it.
