I have a 95 YJ with 29 inch tires. I am installing a 2.5 inch lift next weekend and will be getting new 31X10.5 Mickey Thompson baja MTZ's and 15 X 8 wheels with 3 5/8 backspacing soon. I want a full sized spare. So my question is do I need a tire swing to accommodate a full sized spare of this size, or can the stock gate hinges and spare mount handle that size and weight spare?

The mount will reach just fine since the backspacing is less. I wouldn't keep the spare on there long, but it "should" work for a little while. I ran a 31" spare on mine for a couple months.

Sure it will work for a short term, it would be best to avoid opening and closing the tailgate till you get the tire swing, it's when it's open that most of the downward pressure is on the hinges.

I put a tire relocator on my stock tire mount and have a 33" spare on there with no problems yet. The tire relocator was from Smittybilt I believe.

what is a tire relocator? And how does that improve the life of a stock tailgate? I also want to ad a full size spare but no money for a bumper tire carrier upgrade right now.

It depends on the backspacing of the rims you use if you can use stock mount with 31s. I have stock rims on mine still and I had to buy a tire relocator from smitty. if you have a 3.75 backspace you will be fine
