OK, I'm pretty newbie to the TJ scene, and I was wondering:

my jeep has an aftermarket 4-switch panel which the PO installed. The switches light up when flipped, as well as an LED light (one each side) which in theory actuates when the switches nearest are flipped on. The 2 switches on the L appear to be not wired into anything; they don't light up when flipped and the LED does not come on. The 2 switches on the R, however are "hot," and both light up when flipped. The LED also lights up. The one switch is (was) wired to fog lamps (now removed; installing new ones as soon as I get around to it) which is why the LED light no longer lights up when the switch is flipped.

The other switch, however, is a mystery. When flipped both the switch and the LED light up. I followed the leads from the rear of the switch, they go into the dash fuse panel into a heavy duty (40) fuse. From there I lose the wire. I am hoping I have an after market locker (jackpot!) I currently have the 30/35 with 3.07s, so either way I will have probably have to upgrade at some point- but having a locker would be a bonus. Are there any tell-tale exterior signs to look for on the pumpkin which would indicate a locker? I am short on tools and time, so popping it open is less than desirable. (plus it's frigging cold and I don't have heat in my garage.) I can't ask the PO as I got it from a dealer, and he had "no idea" what the switches did.

any input is appreciated...

Look for an air compressor and listen for the distinctive sound said compressor when activated

Look on the diff's for a wire going into it . Or you could pull a cover and have a look inside unless you just changed your fluid in the diff's . Go to some gravel and see what kind of marks you leave with it on then off just a thought

real newb ?

if I do the gravel test, do I need to have 4wd engaged to have the lockers lock (assuming that I have them)? Or will they engage w/o it? And if that's the case, why not run with the lockers on all the time?

and I'll like that switch panel a heckuva lot more once I figure out what it all does...

If you have lockers you will definitely feel it in the steering when they are engaged.

No you dont need to put it in 4wheele that just gives drive to the front wheeles .
As far as riding around with the locker in the jeep will handle differnt .I have all time locker in my chevy and going around bends it hopps

I was wrong with the above statement . If the locker or lockers are set up like the rubi you need to be in 4x4 low for them to kick in ....sorry forgot they did that

Put the Jeep in gear (or park if an auto), jack up one rear tire and spin it. Now flip the switch and repeat. If you can still spin the tire = no locker. If you can't spin the tire = locker. If you can spin the tire but it's really hard = probably limited slip.

:wavey: I thought the dealer had to give you the PO's phone number if you request it so you can talk to the person about the vehicle. It's that way in Wisconsin. A guy called me about my Dodge Magnum R/T before he bought it from the dealer here in town.
