First sunny day of the year for me up here in Canada so I took my JK to Rubber Duck and washed her and showed her the attention she deserves. But upon close inspection I noticed the paint on my hinges was damn near white and hazy. For the most part on Driver side. I'm sure because its the most frequent side used. But does anybody have any ideas as to what might be causing this?

That looks like clear-coat delamination. This can be casued when there is not enough clear but usually happens when the sun has started to take its toll on the clear. You will usually see this on the hoods or roofs or vehicles most of the time.

It looks like its doing that on the body under the door also from the pics?


My first thought however, was it looked something ate the clear...like something used to lube the hinges?

WD40 Bad?

Hmmm. Interesting. Last summer I used some WD40 on those spots because the doors weren't popping off and on so easily. That might be the problem? What should I use instead to keep the doors nice and slick for easy removal?

WD 40 shouldn't hurt the paint...I use it as well!

Very weird that it's doing that..it's just the hinges or just the lower hinge?

I agree that it shouldn't hurt the paint but silicone spray or graphite are better for the hinges. WD40 stays wet and sticky attracting dirt. Silicone spray dries and graphite is dry to begin with.

Looks like the hinge pin and/or washers used in the hinge are corroding and the corrosion is running down due to moisture and that affecting the paint. Sometime you see cars with rust and the rust marks trail down on to the paint from the rusted area. My TJ did that also and I had to repaint the hinges evert other year. Do you live in an area where there is a lot of salt? Also there may be something else going on also the hinge attached to the door may be a different metal than the portion attached to the vehicle and electrolysis may be occuring. Early model years of the current generation had paint failure on the hinge paint due to that reason.

OP is from Canada, so I'm assuming they see more than their fair share of road salt... :D

The sad part to fix it you have repaint the hinge, the entire door and blend the fender to get it to look right. Good its black paint tho.

Took mine to the dealer yesterday for a couple things and showed him the same issue you are having. He said that essentially all the Wranglers do it and after the 3yr/36k warranty expires Jeep won't do anything. Again he said it's very common.

Even showed him the following but he said there isn't anything they can do. This notes the 2009 model in the body it states 2007-2012.

Gentleman Gentleman thank you for your info and knowledge as well as reading and responding. I do live in Canada, we got salt on top of salt! I'm sad to hear that it is a Wrangler "defect". But glad I didn't cause it as well. I may look into getting it repainted, not the whole door but just a quick job. Couldn't be any worse than how it is now.

Why can't one just re-paint the bottom half of the hinge? Why does the door and fender need to be touched? They way the hinge is designed, I don't think anyone would notice if its paint was slightly off.

I think the message here is to keep the hinges well waxed and the hinge pins well lubed to a point to where you remove the door prior to winter and put a good coat of grease on them.

Do the guys who plastidip their hinges do that part? Maybe that would help, and make it look like more of a MOD, than a fix? And protect that area for the future?

You could do that. It will be off more because of the clear. Generally when you have to make spot repair to a dent in a door or fender you will have to "blend" the new paint in with the old on neighboring parts since it usually isnt an exact match. Makes it less noticable.

For example, I had to have my hood replaced/painted after an engine fire(caused by a local shop). The didnt blend the fenders and you could tell the difference in the color..it was really close but noticable. They had to go back and blend the fenders.


The clear may be "more shiney" on the repair depending on the age of the vehicle.

Most people wouldnt notice. Being that its just a hinge...probably not a huge deal if you just painted the hinge.

Hi, total noob here. Seeing this problem on almost every jeep I've come accross, please do correct me if I'm wrong but it seems to me like the stock door hinges on a Wrangler are a zinc casting. If I'm right, pretty much no affordable paint in the world will stick for very long onto that. And almost every Jeep I've seen has this problem. I have here (not mine) a 2007 Wrangler with the paint on the hinges chipping away completely. From what I'm told, Plasti-dip is not a permanent solution and is usually redone after 2 to 5 years... I'm gearing to remove them, having them stripped completely and getting them powder-coated, which is guaranteed for life or they redo them for free.

I appologize if this next part is a bit off-topic but I've been looking around for an hour and all DIYs I can find are on how to remove the doors off a Jeep. Could anyone be so kind as to point me to a threads that discusses hinge removal? It doesn't look too hard to do but I have a few questions and I want to make sure I don't have a bad surprise.

Zinc can be painted. There is acidic primer that it's prepped with. I would be surprised if the hinges are zinc plated/castings. That would be an extra step on the paint line that wouldn't be time or cost effective.

But it can be painted if prepped right.
