Alright my '99 4.0L I6 oil pan has started leaking lately, it's not to the point that it's so bad that I have to refill it all the time, but still i dont like leaks. I want to replace the rear main seal and the oil pan gasket. The only thing I'm worried about is the downpipe. Will I have to remove the whole downpipe system just to drop the pan? Or can I just unbolt it at the header and bring it down enough to have enough space to remove the pan? (Sorry for the the newbie wordmanship)

If you're asking if you need to disconnect the exhaust pipe, I have the same question and found this by doing a search. I need to remove my oil pan on a 2002 TJ X with a 4.0 and automatic for similar problems.

It has to be removed for the pan swap. Not hard just a PITA, lots of PB Blaster, beers and a buddy will make it easier. A buddy with a garage and a lift will make it even more easier.
