what kind of lubricant does the np 231 transfer case take?

I do believe any good automatic transmission fluid will do just fine. Like Dextron II

I use the same ATF that I put in my tranny.

Yep. You can use it in the diffs too. There's a fella hear with a great big TJ. He told me he uses Royal Purple for everything.

YIKES!!:eek: with 1800.00 worth of gears and lockers plus 500.00 in labor to set them up I think I will stick to Gear Oil, atf may work great but I dont want to be the one to find out it does not!!

I hear ya. I really don't think there is anything to be concerned about, but who knows for sure. I use what the manufacturer recommends and stick with that. I don't want to experiment with stuff either.

Yeah I maean you might save .75 a qt on the Oil but why risk thousands of dollars for that?
