So, been thinking about engine swaps, and I was wondering if it were possible to switch my 2.5 to a........3.6, out of the new JKs. Bet you thought I was going to say 4.0, eh? Fooled you!

Anyway, I did some searching in this forum through the app and on Google and haven't really found a whole lot. Has anyone tried it? Lot of work involved? It'd be too much to ask that it'd be just a bolt in replacement, but who knows.

I wish my TJ had a bigger engine, but the 4.0 swap can get expensive quick and I was just thinking around for some alternatives.

What you all think?

I think a swap to a JK engine would be evn more expensive. The electronics are way different. You might need a complete vehicle rewire.

The 4.0 swap can be done for well under $2k. Having done said swap it is not worth the money. If you are going to do a swap then go V8. The 3.6 is going to leave you feeling under powered as well.
Under 2k? All the estimates I'd seen are over 4k. Is the V8 easier, or do you still need another tranny, harness, radiator, engine mounts, etc?

I agree with V8. If your going thru the time and money may as well make a big increase. I've been planning a swap after I get outta school and have seen that you need new trans, transfer case and rear end if u are going from 2.5l. Sounds expensive, but if u look around at wrecks it can actually be cheaper ( if u can do the work yourself). My brother in law got a 6.0 diesel, wiring harness, and trans that had 49k miles out of a wreck for $600. Of course this wasn't for a Jeep just an example of how cheap it can be. Also there are many write ups online about swapping in Chevy 350's and those can be found cheap as well. My plan is to either find a wrecked dodge Dakota with a hemi or an old carbed Chevy and swap in entire drivetrain.

If you're going to go through the trouble of an engine swap, spend a little more and do it right...why put something in that you can just simply buy stock???

I'll be swapping in a chevy 350 when i have the funds and i have my rig set up the way i want it...not going to mess with a 4.0 or a 4.6 stroker

Is this just as complicated as the 4.0 swap?

I'll have to look around. $600 is a ridiculous deal.

I just did 800 for a Dakota RT 5.9. Took me 2 months of craigslist crawling but the deals are out their.
How much modding is involved? New trans/radiator, etc?

V8 needs same work as a 4.0, still need trans, tc, harness, ecu, if you have a d44 rear you will be fine for now depending on tire size. My under $2000 didn't even count me selling old stuff. I was unable to sell the 2.5 as I blew it up.
4bt Cummins! That's what I'm doing when the time/money is right.
4bt is a heavy pig, there are better diesel options.

What do you consider the better options? The 4bt is about 200 or so pounds heavier than the 4.0 but has tons of torque without additional performance mods. I've seen people claim ~25 mpg with the 4bt. I am aware of the VW TDI swap, my dad has a TDI Jetta. However, it has about 90hp/150tq so it wouldn't be a real improvement over the 4.0 unless it has significant mods. Mods = more $$$. The OM617 swap wouldn't exactly be a real improvement over the 4.0 either. Plus, it gets about the same mpg. What better options are there?

4bt Cummins! That's what I'm doing when the time/money is right.
I would like a 4bt swap as well.... Old school... Screw computers... I don't know a lot about the 4bt but know the ones in case Tractors practically only need a 12 supply to start and run the fuel solenoid.

Learning more as I go
