I just bought this 2004 Columbia Edition which comes with factory fog lights. The seller told me he just had something done to fix the fog lights but he's not sure what. So now I have this TJ and the fog lights only work with the brights on. I don't mind them working with the brights, I just wish they worked with the low beams on. Does anyone have any advice for me? Thanks

the fogs work WITH the high beams? that is not right at all, the factory wiring disables the fogs when high beams are selected.

you should be able to turn the fogs on even with the head lights off. and never when the head lights are on high beam.

advise: replace the head light switch stalk, get a replacement at Autozone for about 60 bucks and you can swap it easily. do a search on this forum and you will find a helpful thread with pix.

A new switch did not fix it. What's scary is that someone was in there and rewired a bunch of stuff, so who knows what they screwed up. I'm thinking maybe a ground or something.

Just a guess . . find the fog light relay and see if they did something with it. The fog light relay turns the fog lights off when the high beams are on. A common hack is to bend a tab on the relay to let the fog lights stay on with the brights. Maybe the PO tried something like that but got it wrong. ( . . how, I don't know, but it's easy to check!)

When I wired up my aftermarket fog lights on my TJ I spliced them directly in with the high beam wires since they'll probably be on too if I'm on a trail at night. The guy's mechanic probably did the same with those.

I've had no problem with fogs/lows on at the same time. Hell, at least half the cars are doing it nowadays.

Edit: legality wise

Having the fog lights and the high beams on at the same time is kind of useless. All the glare you'd get off the fog or what ever you're trying to see under would negate any benefit from the fog lights.

Fog lights should be on only with the low beams.

The ones that I put on are more of a spot light instead of a broader headlight type beam and they work great for lighting up the area of ground in front of the jeep.

Update: whoever rewired the headlights screwed everything up. The wires in the bottom of the TIPM were all in the wrong place. Starightened it out and now everything works as it should. Thanks for the help guys.

A friend of mine installed a pair of factory fog lights and we were surprised to find that they were made by Hella! Their logo is on the bottom of the lens.
