I'll start out by saying that some may see this as a dumb question. But then again if you don't know something and don't ask then you'll never know the answer. With that being said here goes. Just bought a brand new jk. I'm at 500 miles. At what point do I change the original oil it came with. Is there a such thing as "break in oil"? I'm by no means a mechanic. Thanks for any advice

IMO, chg at 500, there is no break in oil per say, but the oil in during break in needs to be changed early and often, I personally do 500, 2500, 5000, then every 5000miles using mobile 1.

The only dumb question is a question not asked! Remember that in life and you will learn a lot.
Now I guarantee you, that you will get so many different responses to your question and it will confuse you even more. Everybody has a opinion and they really are trying to be helpful, but opinions vary.
So just follow the guidelines of your owners manual and your engine will be just fine!:thumb:

As the responses start to come in, then we have what is called a oil war and some times they become hilarious.............:popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:

Thanks for the input. I'll be changing it this weekend. What filter do you use? I usually go with Wix on my other vehicles

I learned a long time ago that if you don't know something just ask. If you go into something not being open to suggestions from others you are only holding yourself back. I was afraid that I'd be opening a can of worms by asking the oil change question. But that's what makes this forum and the wrangler lovers a special group Again thanks to everyone for the advice

The oil from the factory for the 2013 wrangler is 5w20 conventional oil. It is no different than what you can purchase from a supplier. I would stay with conventional oil until your rings have seated in at about 2000 miles and then go to a good quality synthetic, and change it at every 5000 miles. I use Pennzoil Platinum, but there are many good brands out there. I purchase my oil filters from my Jeep Dealer at $5.40 each.

Good strategy... I usually do mine at 500, 1500, 3000 and then at 5000 switch to synthetic. The factory switched to Pennzoil during the bankruptcy so I will simply use Pennzoil Platinum and have the dealer change my oil and filter - using the factory filter.

These quick oil and lube places are careless and stripped the oil pan plug threads on my Jeep and girlfriend's Mazda... so no more minimum wage workers will see the underbelly of my vehicles again.

If the dealer strips the plug threads, they get to replace the pan at their cost.

I've always been afraid to take anything to a quick lube place. Heard too many horror stories about cross thread drain plug. Min wage get what you pay for. IMO

Mine had 680 miles when I bought it so I changed it immediately. The reason was it had been on the lot for several months. If it had just come in I would have waited for 5000 miles. By the way. No such thing as break in oil these days.

That is absolutely true. My son worked at two different quick lube places during high school and college. You would not believe the stories he told about the things some of his co-workers did. If I were not going to do it myself I would trust the dealer the most.

Great advice. I use a similar approach during break-in (100 miles, 2000 miles, 5000 miles, then every 7500-11000 miles), and my Tacoma now has over 330k trouble free miles on Mobil 1.

LOL. These threads are always the same. One question and 100 different answers. OP, do whatever you want to do as far as oil changes go.

My opinion is change things as seldom as feasible. IME most damage to mechanical devices are the result of human contact.

While I certainly don't recommend it, I have seen engines go ridiculous amounts of time on old oil (like 10s of thousands of miles) and/or almost no oil and still run fine well into the 100,000 mile plus range.

I have also seen engines destroyed early in a single botched oil change.

On any new vehicle I've purchased, I changed the oil at about 1,000 miles to get rid of any contaminants or whatever from the manufacturing process. Paranoid? Maybe, but it's cheap insurance for me. As far as the 5w20 oil, I hated it! I used it for more than 20,000 miles and had a knock (ping) when pulling from low RPM. I changed to 10w30 and haven't had that problem. Research weights for your area and go with that. 5w20 will never go back in my Jeep. Enjoy you new Wrangler.
