Fairly easy kill switch (anti-theft device): write up

these days, you can never be too careful. especially with our beloved jeeps. so i decided to install a "kill switch" on mine. i didnt find any write ups on how to do it here, so ill write one. ok its not really a kill switch for the engine, but more of a kill switch for the starter. when it is off, the ignition will turn on, but it will not crank. so even if its hot wired, it aint gonna start. heres how i did it:

its a pretty simple concept. i just routed the starter solenoid through a $5 toggle switch, which i mounted under my dash. so the starter will not receive the "command" to crank the motor

supplies:
-two appropriate lengths of electrical wire (i just happened to use a 3 wire cable i had laying around, but the 3rd wire wasnt used)
-2 ring terminals
-1 spade terminal
-1 butt connector
-1 single pole, single throw toggle switch

step 1: remove the wire from the starter trigger terminal on the starter solenoid. heres a picture:
if your are laying under the jeep on the passenger side, you should be able to access it straight above the exhaust.

step 2: theres many ways to do this, but i cut the old connector off the wire i removed, stripped it, and used a butt connector to connect it to my red wire that goes to the switch.

step 3: put a spade terminal on my black wire (returning from the switch) and connected it to the terminal on the starter solenoid (the terminal i removed the original wire from).

step 4: i routed my cable along the original wiring harnesses running along the firewall, and down through one of the rubber firewall plugs on the drivers side.

step 5: once inside the jeep, i installed a ring terminal on both wires, and hooked them up to my switch.

step 6: test it out before you mount it to make sure everything is in check. like i said, with the switch off, the ignition will go on, but it wont crank. with the switch on, it will start just like normal.

step 7: now just mount your switch wherever you please. obviously somewhere hidden is ideal, but its up to you. i mounted mine up near the steering column, so all i do is reach under and flip it.

I took the ground running to the ASD relay, tagged into a switch inside the jeep.
You can crank it until the cows come home but if the switch isn't closed it won't start. And the sound of it trying to be started gives me time to grab my .40 and go investigate.

HAHA! Now we know how to "test drive" your jeep :whistling:. Planning to do this this weekend. Mine will be in plain sight with all the other switches I will be installing for my lights, compressor, locker, etc. None will be marked but you will need both switches on to actually work (One for the starter and one for the fuel pump)

I need this mod more to keep my wife from jumping in and taking off with "my Jeep" without me looking. She just thinks she is sooooo funny. She needs to get her own friken Jeep!

If your doing it on the starter, put a push button switch on the floor above the gas pedal, especially on a manual. Have to push in the clutch and the starter button.

The better interface is the Automatic Shutdown Relay. It kills a number of circuits. http://jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?t=282786&highlight=ade You don't have to do the full blown magnet syste. I just cut the wire per the diagram and installed a simple hidden switch inside. Or for those that don't want to put it together here is a product Off Road Only TDS-ADE-II - Off Road Only ADE-II Theft Prevention Device for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ & Unlimited - Quadratec

speaker wire would be alright to use, wouldnt it, or do you think its not thick enough?

Watch the gauge, if it's 14 or 16 should be ok.

Now, don't use the stuff with clear insulation, it's a dead giveaway and easy to spot. You want it to look factory. Black always works well, and cover it with split loom or tape to make it blend in.

Alright Sparky, thanks for the advice, im headin out right now to wire it up, i got some 14 guage, should work ok!

The amp rating on the switch shouldn't really matter. The starter solenoid takes hardly any power. I just went to the hardware store and found a sturdy looking mid-range rated toggle switch.

What type of switch did you use, there's many small and discrete switches, the typical toggle switch its 20 amps and I found other switches with 1.5-3.0 amps. Thanks
Oh, one more thing, have you have any problems doing the ASD mod? I'm asking 'cause I read that cut power to the jeep computer.

The starter kill switch won't be any good if it's a manual. You can just bump start it. Fuel pump kill switch is gonna be the way to go.

Mine is Auto......i like this. Its simple, easy to do, and no cranking of the engine. Ive always liked the KISS method. I get a little concern with a shut off that controls a lot of systems. One little burp on a complicated system and im left scratching my head as to why its not starting.

However, i do like the idea that the engine could be used as a security alarm allowing me to go mid-evil on their a$$.
