Gents,
In the link below, you'll see a brand new Jeep, a Hyper Green one, with pretty much every bell and whistle imaginable on it, including a 6.4L HEMI! It's a very nice looking Jeep and they only want a mere $115,000 for it, WHAT A DEAL!!

Anyway, just wondering, quite a while ago, a buddy of mine was ticketed by the CA CHP for incomplete tire coverage of fenders, on his jeep. That is, his fenders did not completely cover the tires which, they didn't. But, I know that many of you might be running around with a jeep that looks similar to the one I linked which, has some SERIOUS non-coverage of the tires.

So, I was just wondering, in all of your states, counties, local jurisdictions etc. across the U.S.A., have any of you that are running Jeeps that have fenders that DO NOT COMPLETELY COVER THE TIRES, been hassled, ticketed, stopped and let go, what?

33 years a CA cop and I never cited anyone for fenders or mudflaps unless their attitude pushed me that way. Never messed with Jeeps even before I owned one. Bigger fish to catch although the lack of them was a good reason to stop someone that needed my attention.

There's more Hot Rods in CA without fenders than there's Jeeps with partial fenders...

Over here the rule is that the tyre tread has to be covered by the fender when you view it from above. Seeing the sidewall is OK. Theres been a bit of argument around the custom car fashion of stretched tyres because the way the wheel rims appear but thats not an issue with Jeeps or Land Rovers. Most Police seem to turn a blind eye though, unless you're spraying mud all over the road.
Personally I'm happy to have the coverage. The thing throws enough crap up the side without making it worse. We get a lot of rain over here so it makes sense to keep the spray down.

Not sure what Tennessee laws are. My tires only stick out about an inch or so past the fender, but haven't had any problems. On the Rubitrux link, I was laughing at first because green is not my color nor would I be able to spend anywhere near that amount on any vehicle. But then....check out the other conversions on their site. There were some I would joyfully purchase and drive. They are kind of rich people toys, but if I were rich, I do believe I would hire these people to fix me up a flame red Rubicon with those cute little windows in the back of the cab. It's nice to dream....

The bigger challenge is states where they do the very thorough inspections. Here in AZ we can run completely without fenders, no law. But the very nazi inspection states might be a bigger issue than a LEO which has more important things to worry about.

The main problem I see with no fenders is trying to follow someone on the highway when it's raining.

Plus, occasionally when off-roading with wide deep tire treads, it's possible to get a fairly large stone embedded in the tread. Then you go on the highway and at 70 MPH the stone works free and fires back at the vehicles behind you at bullet speed. (This is the main reason some places require that fenders completely cover the tire). This isn't a common thing, but it's not impossible.

I love Arizona. Zero fenders required. Pretty much have a windshield or helmet, one brake light, headlights, one rearview mirror, pass emissions if in a county that requires it for registration, and it's streetable.

I lived in one of those nazi states.. find a good redneck inspection garage through the local jeep club.. bring the guy a cold 12 pack of Busch tall boys.

Here in Pennsylvania your vehicle will not pass annual state safety/emission inspection if the "tread" is not covered by fenders. My inspection mechanic says the sidewalls beyond the fender is ok. With my recently installed 35/12.50/R17, I now have sidewalls beyond the fenders but the tread is still under the fenders with my 5.2 backspaced wheels.

Many years ago, in my fancrapulously modded TJ, I too was stopped by the police for this Ontario Highway Traffic Act infraction plus the added problem of having no mudflaps. As the officer explained why I was being stopped downtown, blocking traffic, cruiser lights flashing, a brand new F150 drove by showing the exact same infractions. I asked "why me?" he declined to answer. In the end he really just wanted to see if my vehicle was licensed and that I was a (mostly) law abiding citizen.

I got stopped 3 more times that week for a variety of "problems" until the local force figured out my spray painted jeep and its driver were ok.

Sometimes it's about the appearance of a possible problem, more than a real problem. No tickets or formal warnings were ever issued.

That's because those hot rods are exempt. CA vehicle code 27600, the law that states the fenders must be as wide as the tires (poorly written, but pretty much says they have to be covered) doesn't apply to vehicles made before 1971
