Hi everyone,

I just purchased a 93 Wrangler for $1200 from one of the ads on craiglist. The owner mention that there is one issue with the car and thats the steering box. By advice of few friends saying that getting a new steering box and replacing it would not be expensive at all i went ahead and purchased the car. It has new clutch just put in by the owner, new stereo and few other small things. The tires are in new like shape except for one and only 2 things that worry me is the steering box and there are some rust on the floor that needs to be patched.

Just wanted to see what you guys think about the purchase, if i made the right choice, and what kind of things should i invest in the car.

I dont off road or anyting like that and im basically looking for a DD during the winter months up here in albany, NY.

is it surface rust or rusted through? got a pic?

Look on the inside of the tub/body behind where the diamond plate is, more then likely that was installed to hide more rust. Especially since those are very common areas for rust on Jeeps. Also look over your frame and make sure there are no rusted thru areas.

The steering box is simple to change. But before you do. Make sure the frame is not rusted by where the box mounts.

Before replacing you might want to adjust the backlash.

Loosen the jamb nut and turn the allen bolt a 1/4 turn. Tighten the jamb nut making sure the allen bolt does not move.

Wonder why the PO said it needed to be changed ?

Who cares for 1200 you got a deal
if you only use it for snow and top off fun
the rust is no problem at all

my current yj is a rusty heep but it
never misses a beat
You will read about 2006 tj costing
big money but are nothing but trouble

Hey guys thanks for all the quick replys! I have checked the inside of the car and most of the rust that he covered (he mentioned that before i went to look
at the car is surface rust.

Looks decent. The steering box is a pita to change, but you got the jeep for a nice price.

What do you think est. time is for the fix? total cost? yea thats not too far. One of my friends who i play soccer with is from there.

Im sorry i dont have any pictures from the inside the car but will most def. get some once i have a chance. The car is currently at
one of my good friends as his family owns a auto shop so they are checking it all out and will let me know if there is anything else then steering box that needs attention.

Ill keep that link bookmarked and the original owner said it needed to be changed because after going over 40mph the steering felt wobly! I dont know if its the steering box as he said, but after going through the
forum and reading some stuff i see that it could be few different things.

yes, it will mainly be my winter car for few days out of the week and summer time fun so im hoping its a good 1200$ investment!

Hmm the steering felt wobbly? Anyone else thinking "death wobble"?

Check frame in front and behind rear shackle mounts, under driver door where brake cable goes thru and around the fuel pump. That's where my 95 frame had rust thru. Couldn't tell until I tapped it with hammer. Rusted inside out.

Yes the PO described in more as lose steering but again im not sure, i had to put it on my insurance, and also have to go to register the car etc.

all you may need is a sway bar bushing set Quadratec has them for $14.99
instead of steering box? i will have more time this weekend to test few things out and take it out on the road.

Hi guys,

sorry i did not update my findings till now but i been busy with work that i did not have time to do any work on the jeep as of yet!

I did find out that the steering box is good and that the Bearings are shot so they have been ordered and will be here on Tuesday!! Car drive great locally but not going to be able to take it on the highway.

Tomorrow i will be taking more pictures and will be looking to examine the rust issue into more detail. after the bearings have been fixed my next project will be going over the body and fixing any rust areas and also patching the drivers site floor. The plan is to patch it with rivets and use seam sealer to finish the job there and also any other areas of the floor. Then i will use POR15 to cover the top and bottom of the jeep. ill post the pictures of the project as it goes along
