Hi all! Just wondering if a flooded engine would act like a bad fuel pump? Drove through a bunch of really flooded streets and my jeep was just blub blub blub. Then would take off then blub blub blub. Seems to idle fine and revs up just fine in neutral. Thanks!

Try looking at the distributor cap for moisture.

The water was easily pouring into the grill and the on coming traffic was splashing on my windshield. Should I just start it and leave it idle for awhile? Its a 98 sahara 4.0 with 180k. Thanks

Well, i certainly agree that you should check your distributor for water. that could definitely cause your problem.

Im 34 years old, and in all my years of driving I never drove through rain and floods like that. My daughter was crying in the back cause it was so loud. Crazy.

Ok I just started it up and now check engine light is on. Any ideas? Seemed to be idling just fine, and I drove it around the driveway with no problems. Dist looks ok too.

As the others said, your ignition probably got wet. Physically remove the distributor cap & wipe the moisture out of the cap, rotor, and that general area with a cotton towell. Some rinse it out with WD-40 which displaces water.

Then if your ignition wiring is old & cracked, the spark might be leaking through the cracks & shorting to ground through the moisture on top of them. Wipe the ignition wiring off too.

I'd be very surprised if there was anything more seriously wrong than moisture simply got into the wrong area of the ignition system. Worst case it will dry out on its own & the engine will return to normal, or best case drying it out with a towel/WD-40 may fix it right away. Wipe the ignition coil down too, that is what the center wire from the distributor cap is connected to. :)

Thanks for the advice. Ill try drying the stuff off. You think I should just replace all that stuff? Its all pretty cheap. Its my dd thats why im so concerned. Thanks again.

I'd dry it first to see what happens, don't throw parts at it until you have a better idea of what is causing it. One thing... old distributor caps wear where they seat against the distributor housing which can provide an entry path for moisture. I will sometimes seal them together with a silicone bead run around the inside of the cap where it seats against the distributor housing... just a little added insurance against moisture getting inside when you live/drive in areas likely to have water on the roads.

Ok crappy update..... have to deal with flooded basement. No drying jeep today. Im going to drive it to work tomorrow and hope for the best.

Ok so I drove it back and forth to work about forty miles. The jeep ran perfect. No hicups or anything. The check engine is still on though. Does that need reset or will it go away on its own? I think im just going to replace cap and wires. Summit racing ohio is only ten minutes for me. The cap and rotor set is only twenty three bucks for a middle of the line set, and the wires are the same.
