Wheelin' spots?! In Iowa?! Haha! Jokes! :D

I don't really have any around me other than that Boone Hunting area you tipped me off to - but I haven't been there lately. A few buddies and I took the YJ out on some flooded access roads to a river and pond and got her up to the doors and even a little over her tires in water!

You can kind of see the flooded river in the background of this one - normally the bank is a couple feet up to the "access road" that runs next to it - but it was all flooded

... And then we found some mud on our way out.... Though I didn't try getting too deep or messing around in it TOO MUCH because we'd seen the DNR out there a couple times while we were playing in the water... :whistling:

I only had to use 4WD once - and that was to pull a 90's-or-something Toyota truck out :D - he was so p!ssed when I pulled up next to him in the mud and when he told me he was stuck I said: "Really? I'm still in 2WD" I didn't have the heart to ask one of my buddies to get out in the mud to film the recovery... But the dude didn't even say thanks when I got him out - just jumped out of his truck and pulled his tow strap off my bumper, threw it in the back of his truck and drove off :nonono:

Bulldog/Keymo, where is this hunting road in Boone? I am in WDM and want to get a little off road.
It's right off of Highway 30 if you're heading from Ames to Boone. I forget the road it's after but there's a TON of ruts heading from a forest area to 30 - it's pretty hard to miss if you keep your eyes on the left side of the road - or was last time I went...

If you go to the hunting grounds now, you're gonna get some crazy pin stripping... went there just a week ago and they also filled in a lot of the ruts with gravel..

Y'all know where the Kate Shelly bridge is? Theres 3or 4 places to wheel in that area... evidently its pretty common knowledge around here... but I just found out about them. Definitely nothing too intense unless you want to do a monster hill climb that you have to do some "creative driving" to get to... Fun area! Even a place to pull down and drive around on a sandbar..

If it makes anyone feel better about the area - I made it through about 75% of one of the trails in a '96 Ford Aspire with some VERY careful wheel placement before I slipped into a rut and got high centered. Got unstuck and she made it all the way back out as well.

Oh.. and better instructions...

Boone hunting grounds...

If you're coming from I-35:
Take the exit for 30 towards Ames. Keep going towards Boone. You'll go through the 4-way stop by Boone, keep going on 30 and you'll come across a boat ramp exit. At this point keep your eye on the right side of the road... less than 1/4 mile past the boat ramp exit will be what looks like a dirty/muddy or gravel driveway just off 30. Thats your exit. It will be a wooded area and right after you pull in it will open up a bit and then go back to thick woods. The paths are pretty obvious..

Im not sure if the Hunting grounds is worth a long drive unless you have other business or things to do in the area... You can spend less than 20minutes there and have taken all the possible paths. Its not a very big area... though theres a path you can take and it leads down to a pond thats kind of nice for sitting and relaxing or thinking... or even a date...

Waiting for my GPS to boot up to put up the main Kate Shelly bridge trail.. I know the way there but I want to be more accurate with real street numbers and what-not...

Okay... evidently I cant zoom other than my location... I have the point marked right at the place you turn off the gravel road for a main trail... heres the coordinates for those with a GPS..

N 42degrees 03.724'
W093degrees58.244'

Personally, the Kate Shelly bridge area is a lot more fun than the Boone hunting grounds... the trail is a lot longer in general and theres more "terrain" to take on... make sure you keep an eye out for some trails that are less traveled... theres one across a creek bed(typically completely dried up) with a fun little hill and them you can go even further. The other trails in the area are awkward to describe the locations.. ill have to go get GPS coordinates on them as well...
Though you CAN see the sand bar that you can drive on across the river from the trail I just posted... so if you can figure out the gravel roads to get to the other side of the bridge (closed) then you can get down there... the other trails are on the opposite of the road thats been closed off just up the road from the location I just put up... see what I mean by weird to describe..?

Recently ive also heard that theres some fun places to go wheeling outside a town called Fraiser(sp?)... a guy with a tracker and I are going to go try to find those some weekend...

Im thinking about making an "Iowa Trails" thread... anyone think thats a good idea?

What about the ones by the bridge? How you been? Have you had a chance to check out that brewer in Boone?
Oh! You'll have to navigate some gravel roads to get around the closed road and bridges.. I forget the actual numbers and what-not... just know from driving them... like I said... next time I go ill get coordinates and try and remember road numbers... sorry..

That would be great. Thanks
Trying really hard to talk the Tracker into going out this weekend. Hopefully that will be a success - and if so I will have directions or coordinates... and hopefully directions for those places near fraiser I was talking about..

That would be great thanks! That place by seven oaks is nice but not worth the trip alone.
Word... especially now.. they filled in a lot with gravel and the big hill decent or climb you used to be able to get to has been lost due to overgrowth... plus, if you go there you might as well travel the few more miles for the Kate Shelly ones! :D

Nah... text him a million times from .Monday to this morning... not a reply. Might just go by myself and ask gas stations if they've heard of trails..

Was talking to the guy I met him through last night. Dude probably wont go out the rest of the year... evidently has a VERY needy and pregnant GF...
my coworker knows someone who just got a YJ that needs hella work done to it... so we may work our @sses off on that and get her running and then we will have another trail vehicle! :thumb:
