Hey guys I’m wanting to add fuel can mounts in preparation for a big bend trip and I’m wondering what everyone uses as mounts.
Where do you guys have the cans mounted?
what mounts do you use?
I was hoping to mount them in the rear next to the spare tire but I’m having trouble finding an option that works with a stock JL Rubicon.
Any images would be appreciated as well :)

Justto test it i have had it full loaded like that and open i hung off it that is another 170lbs. Did not bend. jeep leans a bit if its open and if its not level better have good grasp. been on this jeep no over ten years as well.

That’s good to know it can take the weight without having to reinforce it. What mount could I use to mount the fuel can on the side, next to the spare? Everything I’ve looked at requires having to get a hinge reinforcement for fitment purposes but I feel like there has to be something out there that would work with the stock hinges

I have this one and even though I only used it once, it did the job very well and if installed properly it is solid. Doesn't hide the license plate and allows for the tailgate/window to operate like they should.

Alex, that RetroFit Offroad tailgate Rotopax mount linked to in the post above does not require the Mopar tailgate reinforcment --- the brackets that it attaches to are (or can be) in turn mounted directly to the stock hinges:

Another option, nut not rear bumper mount, is the Moride fender mount. You can get them for either the driver side or the passenger side. On the top mounts to the cowl volts and the bottom to the existing points on the pinch seam. Will take either a 5 gal fuel can or a rotopax.

Kraxler, I've looked at those Moride fender mounts for fuel canisters, and it's a nice idea. But unlike their earlier versions for the JKs (which you can still find photos of online), their current version, mounting at the pinch seam, would seem to preclude having any sort of rock rails installed at the same time. I've noticed that all the photos of their current fuel canister fender mount are of Jeeps without any rock rails, which would seem to confirm this point.

Other than a pickup bed, there's no substitute for a proper bumper mounted spare and associated racks. Mine was home built by a genius weightlifter. More doodad bolt-on attachments than Heyload's excellent Hardrock example. It carries a farm jack, two swing-out 5 gal Jerry or water can racks; two tool boxes; cargo deck; shovel; cross wrench; com-along; electrical wiring, rear facing flood lights and lots of tie-down or bungie rings. Problem is too much weight can be added and will lift the front when ascending steps. All the accessory carriers are easily removable, attachable and adaptable for various wheeling conditions. Currently, mine is stripped for city/highway driving. I'll post photos when the need for reassembly is required. It will go with the TJ when I find a 2 door pickup with a Rubicon build package. I'm keeping an eye out for a wrecked JLUR or JKUR to convert into a pickup, but then there's all that unwanted electrical and emissions crap and no 4.0L or short block. They should have put me in charge

I modified them to work with the rock slide engineering motorized step slider. Also, depending on the rock slider you have, they do work with some. I believe they work with the rubicon rock rail out of the box..

Where in Big Bend? Have you been there before? I live in the area (West Texas). There is only one place in the Big Bend region where I actually use the Aux-Tank every time before making a fuel-run. If you are not camping at Guale Mesa or The Solitario region, your standard 22-gallon tank should get you through.

This is my solution. The black disk that sits behind the spare tire is a 10-gallon fuel pod. It comes with a "shaker-valve" syphon hose that allows transfer of fuel from the Aux-Tank to the Main-Tank in a couple of minutes. If you look carefully, you can just make out a black plastic cap below the license plate. That is a 5-gallon water tank. Water is more precious than fuel out there.

Give a yell if I can help. Once I know where you are headed, I can tell you what fuel is available where, and what to be concerned about. BTW, I tow a trailer, I run only high-octane, and I'll grab Top-Tier fuels over other brands whenever possible. (Octane nay-sayers don't bother, I know what I know).

That is interesting to know, Kraxler. Thanks.

In my case, with the larger Mopar 'rock sliders with step assist', I really don't think that the Moride fender mounts would work on my Jeep. I am still curious about their older versions, that did not go down to the pinch seam. But since they changed the design of the mount to make it mount down there, I have to assume that there was something non-ideal with their older mount. I don't know exactly how that one mounted, although it certainly involved the cowl bolts at the very least --- maybe it required some drilling into the sheet metal of the body?

If you get too much weight on the back, these air bags will level things out. Air Lift 1000 Air Helper Springs for Coil Springs - Rear Air Lift Vehicle Suspension AL60817 (etrailer.com) I`ve had no problems with the side mounts. I now try to keep the Jeep "balanced".
Nkvid, That is an excellent point! I'm about to have the same air springs installed in my Jeep, and I'm honestly surprised that I don't hear more about other Jeep owners using them. They would seem to be a great solution to the extra weight of mods, and particularly when it comes to towing and/or hauling heavier loads in the Jeep, where the extra support is customizable to the specific load.
