Anyone else have this problem or know a solution?

i have a 2006 Jeep wrangler X, inline 6. whenever i fill up with gas i cant let the pump stop by itself otherwise the fuel comes spraying out. I have to stop it whenever it gets to about 12 or 13 gallons. never get to fill up the tank. its annoying.

There is a fix for it somewhere. It involves switching the filler hose with a gm one. You should be able to find it using google search.

happens with my yj also. i think its a common problem. what i found out works best for me is holding the pump handle firmly against the filler neck. if i let it go or just hang in there it either cutss off after about 3 seconds, or it over flows. good luck. you will figure it out over time.

This was just in the latest issue of JP (I think) as a reader question, which they said they'd delve into deeper in the January issue. They said a lot of people say it's the hose but there is another problem...sorry I couldn't help more!

I here most say it’s a part in the tank and you can replace the tank only later have the new tank start the same problem.

The inlet check valve sticks open causing this. You have 2 choices so far although there is supposed to be a “pending” class action suit. 1. replace the gas tank for hundreds of $$. or 2. do this mod by replacing the filler hose with a GM one that has a flapper valve in it to stop the spit back. My Jeep does not always spit gas. It depends on the vapor recovery collar on the pump itself. I can tell if it will happen by the sound of the fuel going in. If I hear a gurgling sound it is going to overflow or shut off prematurely. If the fuel flows quietly it will not.

I tried with no success switching out my filler hose with the GM hose. The problem is the GM hose is straight where the jeep hose has a slight bend in it. The GM hose wouldn't go in without a kink which would probably make the filling problem worse. For now I fill the jeep and as I get close to full I slow the flow down and that has stopped the fuel from spitting out.

My dealer changed what he called a rollover or roller valve in the tank. He said the problem is caused by overfilling the tank. Like when the gas shuts off at $51.24 and you cram in more gas until it gets to $52.

I now just stop at the auto shut off and haven't had a problem for years.

Mine will do it but it's sporadic. It seems to overflow if I have more than 1/4 tank when I fill up. I just use the gas stations paper towels and stuff them under the filler.

Don't use the lock feature... Seems kinda dumb to do that if it keeps spilling gas all over the place when you do that... Just sit there and barely hold it. It will fill up, it might click off a few times.

The strange thing about this situation is that I can use certain pumps without a problem. Example: There is a Chevron station down the road from me where I always buy my gas. If I use the #1 thru #6 pumps, I have to hold the handle and it does not shut off. Spews everytime. If I use the #7 pump, I can lock it and walk away. It shuts off without a drop being spilled. The only difference is the design of the vapor recovery collar on that particular pump.

Mine does it also, after some experimenting I either just fill up a certain amount of gallons or I can hear it when its full like the gas is filling up in a narrow space sound that tells me the tank is full and I'll stop there.

I dunno. I use the lock feature but on the low setting instead of high. Yeah, it takes a little longer to fill but I get no gas shooting out of the filler neck.

For those who have used the GM hose like I did, the kink issue can be solved with a hose clamp on the kink. it will keep the hose straight - keeping the action of the flapper valve smooth and uninterrupted. Worked well for me.
