So I've called a few places and they all seem crazy high to do a gear swap. I'm in SW Missouri and all the local places are saying $1,600 to $2,100. Does this seem right to anyone? My jeep is a 2006 LJ Rubicon and I'm wanting to go to 5.13s.

There are some threads about prices but they are all at least a couple years old. Anyone know somewhere near SW MO that I could try?

I'm in the same boat with the same desired setup so I will be watching this thread. Are you planning to do lockers as well? Front and rear? What kind?

Even $1600 is way higher than I'd pay. Before I found out how negotiable that price is, I paid $1300 but my last regearing job was $1087 though I pushed their backs to the wall on that price.

You have to push them to give a decent discount, they'll always quote as much as the market will bear on their first quote. Shops often sell this job at full-price since customers don't know to ask for discounts so they'll always quote the non-discounted price first.

Thanks for the info.

I can buy the front and rear motive gear package and master install kit with timken bearings for around $530. If I assume 10 hours for install even at $70 an hour would put my total around $1250 at max. Does this seem right? I'm not sure how long a gear install takes but it seems like a pro should be able to do it in less than a day.

This was my invoice from a little over a year ago.

$850 of that was locker and there were a couple of extra hours for rebuilding my Trac-lok and pressing in new u-joints in the front axles.

Typical is 3 hours for the rear and 3.5 hours for the front.

I strongly advise you have the shop provide ALL of the parts required for the job. If you provide the parts and if anything goes wrong during or after the job, they'll have a ticket to ride the blame your parts train. Which means they won't warranty the parts, just their labor, and naturally they'll blame any problems on the parts and charge you more labor since they'll never admit to them having screwed up the installation.

And trust me, not even experienced R&P installers get all jobs right the first time. My last R&P job went bad 3-4 weeks afterward and because they had provided everything, they took care of it no questions asked.
