Hey all, so im booked for taking my 2012 jeep to my dealership, Parkway, for the clicking that everyone is familiar with. I had the Problem for 6 months, 5000 miles and now i feel like its time to bring it in. Theres no light and no exact problems, but im not going to stand for a ticking $40K vehicle. THE QUESTION HERE is for all you who recently brought in your 2012s', did the dealer send you back or did you get the problem fixed. Was it the bad header? I dont want to waste my time tommorow with a rental car and find out that they cant do anything if theres no code. All the threads i read so far are dated back to when the problems first happened, but do dealers now just fix the problems without giving you b.s because its so common?

It's the head, not the header that is at fault. I doubt the dealer will give you a problem if the tick is loud enough.

Thanks for the replies, sorry i didnt mean to say headers, but im being given mixed answers. Do you guys and gals with the 2012 just deal with the ticking if theres no code?

Even normal Pentastars tick. No matter how many heads you throw at it. It's the severity of the tick. These engines are noisy by design. You could check with your dealer, maybe hear some other, not new, 2012 Jeeps in service, and compare.

I beilive that, but mine ticks like how everyone with the problem describes. Driver side, louder when warmer etc.

I brought my 2012 in a month ago for this issue. I had no lights or performance issues except for the louder than normal lifter sound on driver side. Sounded like a 4 cylinder diesel. They rain my VIN listened and immeditaely took my keys and put me in a rental. It took 2 complete weeks to fix but now purrs like a kitten!

Just got back home, with my jeep, they need to send in parts so im keeping the jeep for a week but when inspected they said its an extra noisy lifter, which makes since to how it sounds so im waiting for the phone call to bring it back in. Should only be a one day job they said.

edit: wrong thread. lol too many ticking threads.

You'll need a new head. replacing the lifters DOES NOT WORK.

Not in a rude way but what makes you so sure? I realize that most people with the ticking say its a head, but it does sound like a really noisy lifter and i tried convincing the guy there that i was informed that a head should be changed but he insisted its a lifter. You may be right, or he may be right, i just wish Chystler made it an "official" problem instead of a "guess what to replace" everytime a jeep with a tick comes in.

I did get it back after a day and they changed the lifters. I knew this wasnt a total fix but it actually did quiet it down, kind a weird. Its not nearly as loud. Almost a natural noise, but iknow its there. Is it guranteed that ticking=problem? Iknow some peoples are louder than others, whatabout the people with a quiter tick?

sorry, I did not see your previous reply. The reason I know lifters won't help is because it does not address the root cause of the problem. Ask them why you have loose lifters in the first place. Loose lifters are a symptom of the valve seat problem. Chysler even authorizes head replacement if lifters are loose. Replacing the lifters is a waste of time because the problem is in the valve. Only a new head can totally resolve the issue, you'll be back in there before you know it asking for a new head.

I'm not guessing, plenty of people have had lifters thrown at the problem only to go back and get a new head. I think it's another way to lessen the demand on replacement heads and spread the repairs out over time.

Good luck!

Thanks for summing it up for me, makes alot more sense. I told them that chrystler knows about the problem but they said they never heard of it and im the first person. What do i have to do to stop losing sleep about this and get it done.

No problem, it's tough to keep on top of this issue. First, you're covered either way by the warranty. You don't have to put up with a malfunctioning part.

If I were you, I'd take it to a different dealer. I had the same reaction from my original dealer; they claimed to have no clue about the issue. I took it to another that already did several head replacements and boom, in, out and done in 3 days. You probably don't want them to replace your head if you're the first one anyway. If you can't make any headway, open a case with Chrysler.

Do yourself a favor and read thru the thread"update on ticking Pentastar", it will fill you in on everything you need and may go thru. Good luck...

ticking

I have an appointment for 1/17/2013, for the ticking issue, i went for an oil change today and while I was there asked the service writer if he knew anythng about the jeep head issue, he said he didn't hear anything about that. So I am already feeling i am not going to get the issue resolved tomorrow. I have about 3,800 miles, and it has made the ticking as long as i have had it.

Is this what every Jeep employee is told to say or what? Absolutely ridiculous that they continue to lie through their teeth like that. What a joke, Chrysler. And dude, be very cautious and observant of what happens to your Jeep while they have it. Believe me, they will not treat your Jeep as if it's their own.

I'm going to pop into the service department of the dealer I bought my Jeep from and start asking questions. I've got ticking but until I get a CEL I'm not letting anyone touch it, and if I do give anyone the keys it'll be to a tech who has done head replacements already.

And God help them if I find any signs of negligence, I'm going to flip that service department on their head. Way too many horror stories of Jeeps coming back with missing engine covers and oil caps, scratches in the paint, nicks in the seats & interior, greasy fingerprints everywhere, and who knows what else. Oh, but it'll have a new head
