Got the Death Wobble. Hopefully fixed...maybe?

Can't believe a newish (18,000) 2018 Jeep JL already got the death wobble. Brought it to the dealer (they've always been good) who gave me the steering stabilizer recall. (See photo link for details.) I know people say the stabilizer only masks the issue, but someone give me hope that this may work. My wife thinks I'm crazy for having a Jeep...my last one had death wobble too. It's the worst.

If it was TRUE death wobble, as in it shakes VIOLENTLY and does not stop until you come to a complete stop or damn near (like 5mph or less), then no, the stabilizer wont fix it and is a mask for a bigger problem.

Now if you had some other minor shimmy, oscillation that varied with speed, or something along those lines. It might fix it...
There are many threads on this and other sites about the JL “death wobble”, wandering and other steering issues. You’ll find that other parts need beefing up even as it appears the stabilizer has solved the issue.

Yup, replace all your suspension bolts with shoulder bolts. PM me if you want part numbers.
Thanks for the replies. Is replacing the bolts something I can do myself? (Not much of a wrencher.)

Good question. I have done it twice on two JKs and will do my JL next week. It requires a break bar and long torque wrench along with some very high torques. This usually takes me 3-4 hours to do an I am very sore the next day. You do not need to lift the Jeep to do it. You want to actually do it with all four on the ground and go one bolt at a time. Not fun for sure so you might want to find a wrench friend.
I’ve done a couple of bolt swaps on JKs also. I don’t have a JL so am wondering... do they still have the same issue that caused DW in so many JKs?

That was the factory use of undersized (14mm) bolts on both ends of the front track bar where Jeep should have used 9/16” bolts.

A big ratchet strap helps to have if swapping these bolts. You’ll use it to pull things back into line when installing the replacement grade 8 shoulder bolts.

Sans comment on DW Is/or not. When I got my JLUR having driven 80k to the rade-in in my JKURHR. Both to be or end up with The Rancho 2" lift and 33's then 35's respectively... Both Jeeps ended up better for the Mod.

My JLUR (2018) went thru All the recalls it was still lousy. The Lift and new Bigger tires, Geo-Brackets and the Rancho Front TB - ALL added up to a solution and a great riding/handling/performing -Jeep.

I now drive whatever speed I want and do not feel like that will be my last drive.

What did it? I have my opinions but because I did so much so closely separated by time/miles - I'll keep them my opinions.
Safe to say however - Do All of the above perhaps thinking twice about the Mopar "upgrades"... do so (IMO) just to have it logged.
In my opinion the "Death Wobble" is due to crappy front end componemts (tie rod, drag link and track bar). I have never experienced DW in either my JKUR or my JLUR. I attribute that to the fact that when my JKUR had 495 miles on it all the steering components got swapped out for better aftermarket (CurryCurrectLink) and, when my JLUR had about 1000 miles on it all the steering components were swapped out with SteerSmarts.

YMMV but if i were to purchase another JL or JT my 1st mod would be swapping out the factory steering components.
