Hi all, im new to both wranglers and this forum.

I bought a 1994 wrangler, 5 spd, 4.0, with a hard top in mid january with 89,000 miles on it.

After driving it for about a month, one day it started shooting grey smoke from the tailpipe. It lasted only a minute or two, and then stopped smoking.
No change in rpms or noticable difference in driving. The car had been running for aprox. 45 minutes when that incident occured.

It happened a second time about two weeks later, simular conditions.
I checked the oil level and i had lost about a quart in one month. My jeep doesnt seem to leak oil though when i check under where it was parked.

Latey though, the smoke happens about once every other day, again lasting only a minute or so, then going away like there is no problem at all.

Any insights or thought would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Aside from that and the fact that every time i look i feel the preveous owner never did maintainance, it runs amaisingly strong!!!

Gotta love a Jeep

As Amerijeep says, great choice of Jeep.

Are you seeing anything else like milky oil or consumption of radiator water?

I would start with the basic stuff. Change your oil to Castrol GTX 10W-30. It is the best oil without going synthetic. It will clean the gunk out of your motor, which is probably the case. Then I would run Berryman gas treatment through the gas to get rid of any carbon built up on your lifters. If that does not cure your problem, you have more serious issues. Before we go into that, also make sure you have a new air filter. If your engine has a PCV valve, change that out. More than likely it is just a carbon build up issue. Douch your engine with clean, good, oil, and the Barryman gas treatment. Get rid of all the carbon build up. If after doing all this, and your engine still smokes, you have worse problems. Your piston rings are shot. That is the worse case scenario. Also put in new spark plugs.

The smoke happens after driving for a little while. It is greyish white in color, and i checked the oil to see if it looked like it was mixing with antifreeze, but didnt appear to be. I also checked the radiator for oil and didnt find any. Im not loosing any antifreeze either. I'm putting roughly 1,000 miles a month on it give or take 100 miles. I just performed a tune-up and the two spark plugs closest to the firewall had some oil deposit, the closest being the worst. It had been so long since the vehicles last tune up that i was suprissed any of them were still passing a spark. But in comparing it to the book, all just seemed to be old and worn.

Also, (not sure if this is related) when i changed the air filter there was a LARGE deposit of oil directly under the air intake to the valve. I couldnt tell if it was recent or the last owner just neglected maintainance. I removed the ccv tube to clean it, but it was so gunked up, i replaced it with a new one. After doing this i took it on a hour drive, and again the smoke came out around the 45 minute marker or so.

I also used a gas treatment recently, not sure if it was the berryman though

Im also starting to think it is happening after i sit idle for a while (stop and go traffic)
