I was reading the following thread and was just wondering about the paint's texture that we see on our hardtop.

My hardtop is blistering/bubbling - Jeep Wrangler Forum

Does this "rhino liner" type texture come from the paint used or is it part of the hardtop? In other words, would the hardtop show the same texture if the paint was stripped?

Also what type of paint is this? It feels sort of rubbery.

Based on that rubbery feel, I'm guessing it's a gel-coat type of paint, which is commonly used on fiberglass. I would guess the texture comes from the paint or the process. I've seen cracked hard tops and they're just the typical fiberglass-weave texture. You actually have to apply quite a bit of primer/paint to hide that texture (it was a significant weight factor on my dad's fiberglass homebuilt plane). Or if weight isn't a concern, more epoxy then sand it smooth.
