Hardtop question?

1025 Views 13 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  blkrubi88
I'm getting ready to pick up a hardtop on Saturday. I have a 2000 Jeep wrangler. I know it was equipped for a hardtop because it has the harness in the back for the defroster and wiper and the buttons are already installed up front.

My question is what all do I need to remove from the soft top to get the hard top to fit. I'm assuming the back framing and the bar going across the top but is there anything else I need to remove. Also I saw a post where someone used 5/16 bolt with wing nuts to secure the hardtop on. Does that size bolt sound right. I just don't want to travel 3 hours and not have everything I need. All information necessary would be greatly appreciated.

You need to remove the door surrounds. and all of the soft top bows and tailgate bar.
I use 1/4 inch by 1 inch bolts with a flat washer on the hardtop and the wing nut under the rail.

Does the hardtop you are buying have vents at the back windows?

You make an important point, if the top he's buying doesn't have the side vents then there's a chance that the glass could pop out or ect.
I believe it has the vents. I just emailed the seller to check. I don't remember from the picture but I believe the vents were in the top.

Just hate to see someone make an expensive mistake.:thumb:

There is NO chance windows will POP OUT. Plenty people have 03+ tops on 97-02. The doors will be a little harder to close and some have said the HVAC whistles.
Anything else I need to know or anything look out of the ordinary from the picture that I should be concerned about. I know the hinges have some corrosion but that is an easy fix.

Then you're good for ventalation.:thumb:
The top looks like it's in pretty good shape from the picture. As long as you get 6 bolts, 6 washers and 6 wing nuts up you should be good to go, don't forget to take something to tighten the bolts down
Thanks guys. I appreciate the help.

Thats just what I was told on here when I was in the market a couple years ago. Good to know, thanks.

Stand a chance of bad condensation on the inside due to poor ventalattion with the newer top on an older TJ.
