Now that the weather is colder and I run the heat on a regular basis, my 03 Sport has developed some heater control issues.

1) I hear an intermittent tick that sounds like it is coming from behind the climate controls, and toward the passenger side. It does not occur at regular intervals... maybe every 1x every 10 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds. It varies.

2) I also noticed that when I have on any of the heat options involving the AC, my tachometer needle will occassionally/randomly jump 1000rpms, then go back down.

Does this seem like some type of vaccuum or electronic control issue?
The heat blows hot, AC blows cold, and all fan functions work.

click could be debris inside the blower motor, my suggestion is have the fan on full blast once a week if you have many leaves outside.

I 'think' i have a similar ticking noise that you're describing. I tried finding it, but can't seem to nail its exact location.

I took a quick video with my phone, using the media player on my pc it appears the 'tick' is roughly every 8 seconds. It too happens when I have my heater control set to the A/C capable modes, or the defroster.

But yeah, is this the 'tick' that you're hearing?

Sorry about the volume, I don't have any video editing software to reduce it...

I haven't listened with the hood open yet, but I'd say it sounds similar. It is a little more muted inside the Jeep.

I was thinking the tach going up on its own might have something to do with the Throttle Position Sensor. I did the ignition diagnostic function, but no codes are coming up.

I see no one has answered the mystery yet, but here i am piling on. I have just noticed the same issue in my 02. With the heat and/or defrost at any/all settings (fan speeds and heat level,) there is a noticeable "click" coming from somewhere under the glove box area, followed appx. 5-10 seconds later by a lightly more muted "click" which emanates from what sounds like a slightly different place (but from same general area.) The cycle repeats about 2x per minute. This started yesterday, and continued today.

The heat system seems to function fine; no RPM differences, no heat, engine temp, fan strength issues....just that annoying double "click." Any experienced jeepers have any ideas?

that clicking sound is probably the AC pump replay kicking in and out.
it also could be the step motor controlling the blend door adjusting the air.

Not sure on the clicking noise, but the jump on RPM's is probably when the compressor kicks in for the a/c. And that is normal. After watching the video, I believe that is the clicking you are referring to. The compressor is below the power steering pump. If you look close the clutch spins briefly the stops. The clicking is the clutch kicking on and off.

From the video is sounds like the compressor kicking off an on. Which explains the rise in RPM's. It is located just below the power steering pump. if you look closely you can see the clutch move when it engages. Not sure if that is your clicking noise or not.

Yep, sounds just like compressor clutch locking up. Very normal, you should hear the same thing in the summer w/ the ac. This does only do this when the defrost is on right? shouldnt do it w the floor or dash heat on only defrost.

mine does it either way.... even when just the heat's on. defrost doesn't seem to matter. It was my first thought as well.

In my case, the noise only happens when I have the A/C running or when using either defroster selection. It does -not- happen when I have the dash only or floor only selected.

I'm gonna try and find this clutch tomorrow sometime. If it is getting stuck, is there a lubricant or something that you guys/gals would recommend using to un-stick it? I've got a few cans of WD-40 on hand, and have no problem getting something else if needed.

Since it's gotten colder here in CT, I've noticed a couple other 'odd' noises. When I figure out where those are coming from, i'll be searching around the forums a lot more...

I hate extra noise. Makes me think something is going to go wrong, either while I'm driving or before I start the next day...

The compressor click unfortunately will not go away. It is metal on metal so there is really no way of making it go away. :( Just part of the mechanical part of the compressor.
