Ok guys, I have some problems with the jeep. I got a little money now from my summer job so im looking to get everything fixed up.

The main issue is that it does not EVER fire up the first time, I have to crank it two or three times and then its a really rough start. I don't think it is the fuel pump. Im going to go get my battery tested when I can find the time. PLEASE can someone give me a magical answer! lol

I was thinking it might be the spark plugs, but that wouldnt make sense. That would explain a rough start and rough engine but not multiple cranks?

Bonus question! The engine bumps around alot when im just starting to take off and it smooths out after about 20 feet?

Rough start after two or three cranks could be just a good tune-up. Plugs rotor cap wires, fuel filter, air filter and clean the battery terminals and check all the wiring on the engine. By that I mean may have a loose or disconnected wire to something that feeds the ECU info. You may also want to check all the vacuum lines are attached, not cracked and leaking or collapsed.

When all this is accomplished see if you can get a hold of a timing light and check and see what you have against the book for your model and engine most Jeeps are 8 BTDC or before top dead center. If not there the ecu is getting bad info and adjusting based on the info.

I had a vehical do that before.
Could be a cracked fuel line, or something. Basicly I was loosing my fuel prim. So it would crank and crank until it got primed by the pump THEN start....

Got it fixed under recall. (That was my Chevy though) I could see a smilar situation happening on the Jeep though.

The fuel filter in TJ's is considered to be good for the life of the vehicle by the factory

I would look at your anti-drain back valve in your fuel pressure regulator. The location varies by year, but it is either contained in the fuel pump or it sits on top of it. Does it start right away if you turn your key on wait for a couple of seconds and then start it?

fuel pressure regulator symptoms do seem to make sense. Could I replace it without dropping the tank all the way, if I kept the lines connected and only lower it??

Try cycling the fuel pump. (Turn key to on position do not start wait a couple of seconds, then off and back on) then try starting. This should tell you if it getting air in the system while sitting. You have to cycle it cause the fuel pump only comes on for a few seconds with the key on and the engine not running. Then once the engine starts the pump will stay on. So if she starts up better after cycling then you know your going the right direction.Hope this helps.

I tried it with the key in the on position and it did not seem to help. But I have learned that after starting it multiple times in a row, it does get easier to start each time, is that something?

I am having a similar situation with my 99 TJ. When I start its very rough, and takes a lot to get it going. The only real difference is that once mine finally starts it dies immediately. It continues to do so until it has warmed up to normal temp. I have to drive with at least a little pressure on the accelerator at all times until it has got to temp. I was curious if this could be a fuel pressure regulator issue as well.
I am new to jeeps and can use any help i can get.
On a side note occasionally while i am driving the voltmeter goes nuts. All the way to red. I pull over and cut the power, then start back up and there is no problem. This has been bugging me longer than the starting issues.
Again any help would be great.

I have a '98 that I bought early this summer. I had the same issue, which was disclosed by the seller when I bought it. He gave me a new fuel pressure regulator as he never got around to installing it. I installed it over the 4th. You pretty much have to drop the tank in order to replace it. This wasn't a big deal though, as I needed to drop it anyway to install my fuel tank skid plate.
