I need some advice. I have noticed a high pitched sqeal coming somewhere from the pulley assembly on my Jeep for a few weeks. The sounds seems to be coming from the fan, fan clutch, or water pump. I had the serpentine belt replaced three weeks ago.

Today, I was driving home from work and the sqeal became louder. I was turning down my street and the "Check Guages" light came on and the water temp guage shot past the red line. I smelled some burning. I turned off the Jeep and looked for anything obvious in the engine compartment. I do not notice anything out of the normal as this must be something internal. Any ideas as to what this might be? Help is appreciated. I do not want to get screwed at the stealership.

If you can pull your serpentine belt and spin all the pulleys especially the idler and water pump pulleys and see if they spin freely. sound like a bearing is going out on you.

Sounds like your water pump is froze up. Did it just start happening when you changed the belt? Or , was it the reason you changed it in the first place? With a clutch fan ,you will still be able to spin the fan by hand. You need to remove the belt and see if you can turn the water pump shaft/pulley. If not, it will need to be replaced.

My assumption was going towards the water pump. I replaced the serpentine belt before I noticed the issue with the whining sound. It was always there (noisy anyways) but my Jeep has 93,000 miles on it. Thanks for your input. A few of my friends said the same thing but they did not look at it. I am somewhat mechanically inclined but not enough to replace the pump.

PS--Anyone know how extensive the work would be to install a new water pump? I am seeing prices for the pump at around $40.00.

Get a haynes manual if you can, but the basic procedure is to remove the serpentine belt, drain your radiator, remove the water pump, clean off old surfaces, install new gasket and water pump, snug the blts down, reinstall serpentine belt, refill cooling system, then run at idle until warm to make sure you're not still overheating.

Agreed on the water pump. The pump not circulating the coolant through the block would heat up fast. Be careful not to run it hot like that = blown head gasket = oil in coolant, coolant in oil = locked up, hydrolocked pistons. IF the water pump wasnt spinning at all though, it would prolly burn the belt off and would smell like burning rubber. Its not too intensive of a job. Just be sure to get your gaskets on correctly where the pump meets the engine block.

Same thing happened to me just yesterday. I drove it back home (with no belt) for about 15 miles. I had to stop once to let the engine cool. I would also change out the thermostat while you're in there.

Pump should be relatively easy R & R. Take off the belt, place drip pans under your engine where the pump is. Some have hoses in and out of them, take them off. If this is the factory pump and factory hoses you may want to replace them too. Because the other thing that could be going on is that your lower hose is collapsing in on itself thus stubbing the coolant flow. Depending on the model, a couple of bolts to loosen and the pump comes off comes off.

Above is the basic procedure, always depends on make and model. As suggested, get a Hanes, can't go wrong with them. More than sure this procedure has been fully documented on the web.

Some come with compression gaskets, some take RTV, ask before leaving the auto parts store, take it out of the box, ensure the gasket it is there if it comes with one. Blue RTV will also be good insurance around the bolt holes.

With 96k condsider doing the following:
Upper and lower hose replacement (if it hasn't been done)
Water pump
When was the last time you flushed your cooling system? Your there, your messy, might as well do that too. Just need a coolant catch for your old stuff.

This is a really good time to get into wrenchin on your rig.

Actually there are several things that could cause your belt to squeal and once slipping, it ain't going to turn any pully fast enuff, including the water pump...

It could be your A/C compressor dragging, a bad Alt bearing, bad idler bearing or the water pump bearing, or even the power steering pump...

Usually, when the water pump bearing goes bad, so does the seal...A bad bearing usually allows the shaft to wobble-but not always-and when the shaft of a water pump wobbles even a little, the seal goes bad fast and you get a visable leak.

So go into this with an open mind and don't fail to check everything that belt spins EXCEPT the crank.

Oh that's funny. My water pump went out on me Friday. So, I did a search and found this thread. Didn't think to look at the date. Great info, though! Thanks all
