So my wife ran into a tree this morning messed up the bumper which is no big deal but the other thing she broke is.

It looks like she broke the gear at the bottom of the steering gear box off where it connects to the pitman arm.

Does the whole gear box need to be replaced?
If not what is the name of the rod that broke off?

Do anyone know where I can find the directions to replace the "rod" or if I have to the steering gear box?

Thanks for everyone's help in advance!

My two cents, even if you can replace the shaft, which I'm not sure is possible, a lot of forces were applied to everything in that steering box. It's a fairly important bit, why not replace it for safety's sake?

It's called the steering sector shaft. It is replaceable, if you are very knowledgeable about the internals of steering boxes. Google it. If not just replace the steering gear box as Captain Obvious said. It is a major safety item........

Sector shaft snapped/sheared off. Definitely get a new steering box and be done with it for safety sake!
