I'm dropping the tranny to replace it with a ax15. Just can't get the shifter off. Any ideas to removing it?

Yeah there is a picture attached of the top of the shifter. You need to push down and turn the collar which is locked on two pins in the top housing.

Ok, so I should have been more specific I just need to remove the handle. I see in the pic that the top is square and it has some small holes in it. It has to be a very simple thing that I just can't seem to get...

Is it an aftermarket handle? The small holes may contain a small allen key bolt that must be unscrewed first before handle removal

no its stock and no screws at all. looks like it has four tabs between the handle and the shaft it fits on.

The isolator clip has 4 tabs, 2 of them(the ones facing the doors) need to be pulled out a little, then lift/pull hard if you have to. It clips into place. So you'll need 2 small screwdrivers to pry the tabs a little.

I just realized that I was thinking about the 4wd lever. I don't know if the gear shifter is the same way.

I took my shifter knob off a couple days ago. I just took a pair of pliers to the base of the knob and twisted. It was hard to "break" at first, but it was easy after the initial break. I could not get it with my hand, but I replaced the shift knob with a bud light beer tap handle.

That should work for you, mine is a 91 that was poorly taken care of.

Threads are the same as normal, so put pliers and squeeze and turn to the left, it took me like 1 minute from start to finish, but that was because I didn't know if that was the way it went on.

Just like jokerchief said. The pic he has is of the bottom part of the shifter. Look at the rubber ring on the right side of his pic. the rounded piece just under that (if that was standing up and down) is the piece that you have to push down on and turn to the left in order to release the shifter from the trans. See the locking notches on it? Less than a quarter turn does it. Sometimes if they are old and rusted, you need a big pair of channel locks to grip the lock cone.

If you attempt to take the top part off at the place where you see the 4 holes on his pic, you will ruin the shifter. it isnt made to come apart there.
