04 TJ X, I-6, manual: I get a marbles in a coffee can kind of sound from under the Jeep while idling with clutch out. Put clutch in, it's quiet. I changed transmission fluid to Royal Purple, and the sound was quieter but still there. (Shifting improved too!)

Thoughts on what this could be or do I need to upload video?

I've changed front diff fluid (Dana 30) Transfer and rear diff fluids (Dana 35) are next on list although this may not be related at all.

I have the same year/model and the same issue, though only when warm. My Jeep has just under 50k miles BUT was a tow behind. I've wondered if driving the output shaft of the transition without the engine running ( as can happen when towing if the transfer case is left engaged ) could have damaged it. I posted a thread with mixed results. ( towing-in-neutral ) Have you towed your jeep?

Gottagofast: The whole transmission worn out?

DWT: Mine has triple the mileage (like 153K) but wasn't towed to my knowledge. We bought it from the original owner in 2017 with 146K.

It starting to get a little tempermental going into first some of the time, but the rest of the shifting is smooth through all of the gears. A guy that restores muscle cars at my office guessed throw out bearing?

If it were just the throwout bearing the oil change wouldn't have helped.... not saying you don't have noisy clutch parts but my guess is transmission wear... that said, they can be REALLY noisy and tempermental for years often without complete failure

Dwt the answer to your question is there is a bushing where the output shaft goes into the back of the mainshaft that requires gears spinning to get lubed...

The NV3550 is a noisy transmission, that simple. What you're hearing is normal.

The NV3550 in my 2001 TJ made the same noise when I bought it in 2004 with 30,000 miles and it was still solid when I sold it in 2012 with 152,000 miles.

While this is true of the nv3550, I believe he has the nsg370 6 speed.

My bet is "Gear Rollover Noise". You'll hear it when the clutch is up, it stops when the clutch is down. When it's real bad it sounds like there's marbles banging around in the transmission. Slight rollover noise is considered normal, changing out the fluid can help.

Sorry, just to clarify, are you thinking that bushing might be the reason there's a sound difference clutch in vs out and it's normal? Or that busing is something that I should have checked, because it could be the issue (or at least part of it.) Thx

That's the normal sound of the transmission's input shaft and its bearings being spun by the engine. Stepping down on the clutch pedal stops it from spinning. My AX-15 transmission made the same sounds that scared me too at first.

Neither... as I said that was the answer to the question asked in the other thread...

You are just hearing a noisy transmission.... will likely get a little noisier over the next 10 to 15 years

The NV3550 was used in the TJ from 2000-2004. The NSG370 was introduced for the 2005 model year.
Oooohh. I always thought it came in with the Rubicon in 03. Not sure why though. Thank you
Anyway, then I totally agree on this marbles in a can noise being common on the nv3550 5 speed and mine (2000 Sahara) went 16 years, including 9 with me, with nary a problem. Even filled it with mudwater once, drained and kept on agoin. Hell, might still be going now, the place I traded it in to in 2016 said they sold it to someone who wanted it as a plow rig.

That's the exact sound mine makes once it warms up. Mine is also temperamental about first gear sometimes. If I know it's going to be a short stop, I put in first before stopping. If I'm stopped for awhile, I'll sometimes shift to second and then into first, all without letting the clutch out. It goes into first easier then. I think it aligns the synchros. Maybe the first gear synchros are starting to wear out.

In any case, I've decided to ignore the noise for now. If I grenade the tranny,
I'll likely replace it with an AX15.

Thanks all. I'm doing my first Jeep Jamboree in a few weeks and want to make sure my rig is ready.
