Hey guys, I have a dilemma! I ordered a Wrangler unlimited with the hard top and it should be delivered in a couple weeks. I currently have an FJ Cruiser (flame suit on!) with a Baja Rack and I LOVE the rack. I'm trying to decide whether or not to put the same rack on the Jeep.

Here's my thinking:

With the rack
-I use it all the time for camping and what not but it's a pain to take on and off the freedom panels and if I get a soft top down the road it really makes the SunRider option take forever.

Without the rack
-I could buy a soft top with the money I save and I could take the freedom panels off easy as well as actually use the soft top. But when camping I will have to pile gear next to our car seat for our 8 month old which I'm not excited about as well as not having the rack for all the other random stuff I use it for.

I don't know what to do! Any hep/suggestions is appreciated!

If I was always going to have my hard top on and always needed the rack, I would have put on an AEV or an Off Camber rack.

If I had a garage tall enough to hinge the rack back so I could trade out a hard and soft top and use my hoist, I would have put on a Gobi.

But since I don't fit in those categories, I put an Out4x4 internal support system in and a rhino rack on top. It doesn't interfere with the freedom panels when on and it only takes me half an hour or so to put it on or take it off, which is nice for the 10 months a year I don't use it.

I thought I would get a soft top at some point, but I just go topless in the summer or put the freedom panels on with the doors and the back roof off and I'm happy. I might get a spiderweb shade at some point, but haven't seen the need yet.

Only you can figure out the right solution for you. Good luck.

Im in the same dilemma. I want a roof rack, as the trailer hitch style racks get hungup while off road.

R51 mentioned a Gobi that hinges back. I need to google that....

Hmmm.... I had never heard of the Out4X4 rack before but I just looked it up and it might be a good option for me. I was trying to avoid any drilling into the hard top or Jeep which is why I like the Baja Rack (or Gobi) but if drilling the hard top solves all my other problems it may be worth it.

Couple questions for you:

1.) Any issues with leaking where you drilled?
2.) When you say it takes a half hour to take on and off is that installing the Rhino rack to the Out4X4 support system? I would assume the Out4X4 stays on the hard top all the time.
3.) Any pictures of the Out4X4 system with and without the Rhino rack?

Thanks so much for responding! :) This might be just what I'm looking for (minus drilling).

I looked hard for something to meet my needs and this came closest. I got the first out4x4 off the boat from Australia. So far it works very well.

No leaks whatsoever. I did seal each part with a silicone adhesive during the initial assembly for just that reason though.

Absolutely correct.

I'll check.

Am I remembering wrong? I thought it was the gobi that hinged at the back so you could pull the hard top or lower the soft top. Apologies all around.

There are a few racks that hinge back to assist taking off the top. The Gobi, the Baja Rack, Garvin makes a few racks that do it and so do a few other companies.

Picture of the rack installed. When I bought it, I was told that they were working on a lower profile deck that they would have ready for SEMA, don't know if they ever did anything about it.

Is the basket only supported by the forward 2 supports?

No, sorry. That's a bad pic. It comes with only the back 2 supports, the front supports are extra but allow it to carry more weight, another 150 pounds or so? I don't remember. Here's a better one.

Here's what it looks like with the rack and bars off. Gives it a bit of a square look. I like it better, actually.
So you can take the bars off and still no leaks?? I was imagining the bolts that hold the bars to the hard top going through the roof and into the internal support structure. This might be exactly what I'm looking for!

My other option was going to be buying the Baja Rack and only putting it on when I need it.

Right!

Those black brackets you see on the roof are permanently attached. They connect to the internal supports. The bolt that attaches the bar to the black bracket does not penetrate the roof.

Very cool. I'm liking this more and more. I'm definitely between this and the Baja Rack.

I thought I read somewhere that they are making or made a Rhino Rack that mounts directly to the black brackets on the roof so it sits lower and then you don't need crossbars. Know anything about that?

I have the Body Armor rack and like it a lot. Like you, I use my rack/basket a lot for road trips since my two dogs take up a lot of room in the back.

The base unit is pretty beefy and the basket can be taken on/off pretty quickly if needed. The rack does not interfere at all with the freedom panels, which was a big selling point for me. I looked at the hinged ones but that seemed like too much to do just to pop those tops off. It's also not supposed to interfere with hard top / soft top but I haven't had my hard top off yet.

That's what the rhino rack guy told me last year. I don't know if they actually did it or not. If you don't see it on their website, you might call them.

I am new here. Trying to learn how to make a new post but cant find the option. Anyway, I have a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (soft top) and am looking to order a Kargo Master Congo Cage rack for it so i can haul a kayak. I am finding mixed information about these, as the directions online do not match up to what the info regarding the cage says. Anyone know about these?

One of these. Bloody awesome. Very strong, basket i built myself. But if you just had the cage it would be perfect for a kayak.

How is the increased noise??? Someone on body armor's site said it was maddening and that he his now certifiably insane after he had a long trip.
