Hi from Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK.

I've been lurking as a guest, doing my research, and signed up when I knew a YJ was right for me (and when one became available - Wranglers are so rare over here, YJ's especially so).

Haven't managed to get any decent pictures but you've seen it all before! As far as I know its completely standard 1995 UK spec. And that's where I need your help...

Can anyone see anything missing or added to the engine bay that wouldn't be normal fitment? Anything look to be odd or worrying or any potential problem areas I could tackle first? I've noticed the air box has huge hole and no feed to it, sucking straight from the engine bay. Is that normal?

The thing I'd really like to resolve is the lack of centre console or at least have some kind of cover over the handbrake mechanism. It looks untidy and I just don't fancy having the kids poking the cables and ratchet with their fingers. We don't have a decent Jeep parts supply like you have in the US and Canada. There are no breakers that keep this part and the after market is geared for off road or cosmetic mods. I'm even considering going to a local carpet centre and see if they can get a close match until something else comes along!

Last thing I need some advice on - what do those parts on the seat come together to form? They're a mirror image of each other but I cant see what they join around - it doesn't seem to fit the handbrake area mentioned above for example.

It's different for us on this side of the pond to see the locations of the brake booster and the battery switched.
Where's your windshield washer reservoir?

If I was running a hard core rig, I'd like to have that E-brake setup. I'm guessing those plastic covers fit around some sort of frame that attaches to the floor around the E-brake lever.

I haven’t seen many engines bays of the export YJ’s but looks to be pretty stock from what I see, the only modifications that jump out at me are the horns on your drivers side, and that you are lacking a fan shroud.

The plastic pieces on the seat you have pictured don’t look familiar at all, the air box is like that, on the early YJ’s they had a tube that bought it further out towards the grille, but it was omitted from the later models.

I almost think your parking brake was done after the fact due to the lack of an available correct YJ parking brake, you will see them typically under the steering wheel on our drivers side, but I guess it feasible due to your YJ being right hand drive it might be different?

Welcome! I would suggest finding a factory service manual for Jeep export models that went to countries that have right hand drive. I believe YJ’s were pretty popular in Australia so start by searching there. Australian Ebay might good for right hand drive specific parts. Other than that get what you need from North America.

The parking/E-brake is probably specific to right hand drive Jeep’s as left hand drive YJ’s had a foot activated brake mounted to the left side kick panel.

I looked in Got it at last's signature and found a Factory Parts Manual for '94-'96 Jeeps.
There are some references to export YJ's, primarily to Egypt.
Some oddities are a 4 door YJ and YJ's equipped with D44 axles.

I didn't find the console section but I didn't search too long. I was thinking that if there were info on some export YJ's, that the parts manual might show the necessary console parts that Gaz9000 needs to cover his right hand drive E-brake assembly.

Some Jeepers have modified a Cherokee E-brake to work in a YJ but I'm guessing what Gaz9000 has might be stock. @vmxwinn could be correct.
Upon looking closely at his plastic pieces, I'm wondering if he could remove the lever assembly and hold the plastic pieces around the assembly. Then reattach the assembly back where it is now, but with the lever assembly enclosed with the plastic pieces. It looks like a person could mate the two parts together and there would be an opening on the back for the cables to pass through. There looks to be a hole in the bottom of each piece where a screw would hold the plastic to the bottom of the lever assembly.

Gaz9000, let us know what you find.

Windshield washer is hidden underneath the brake booster and next to the fuses. I just went out in a mild panic when I looked at my uploaded pics and couldn't see it either!

Good shout to those suggesting I check other markets for what they may have been equipped with - I'll definitely do this.

I've tried turning and mating and mounting those pieces together to see whether they encapsulated the handbrake mech or the cables but no joy. It may have worked with some other pieces but it just doesn't sit right.

Just took the hard top off to put the soft top on. What a job that was. I thought it was a relatively straight forward process but you need more muscle than I was expecting!

Anyway, you likely won't have heard but its something of a heatwave at the moment in the UK. Its been 25 degrees Celsius here today, people are actually passing out on the pavement (not kidding). So, here's what she looks like in the fine weather. I absolutely adore the paintwork when the sun hits her.

Noticed she's a bit lumpy coming off the throttle and immediately getting back on. Kangaroos a bit and doesn't look too cool to the numerous onlookers. But what a sound on throttle!

Oh and another thing I've found - those orange (parking?) lights under the headlights...we don't have anything behind them. They're literally little windows to the rad with no electronics. Weird.

The orange (amber in US lingo) lenses are where an American (North America and South America) YJ's have their parking lights. European Yj's are located on the fenders, as yours are. It seems to simply be a matter of local regulations.
I'm guessing that it was less expensive to leave empty lenses in the openings than to manufacture a grill panel without the openings for export. Adding the European park/signal lights was Jeep's way of dealing with the local regulations there.

We think the European signal/park lights on North American made vehicles look klunky, but we sure like the E-Code H4 (European) headlights rather than the DOT H4 (US) headlights.

I'm curious about what you may discover about your handbrake. Please keep us posted.

According to one website 25* Celsius = 77* Fahrenheit.
It was 95* Fahrenheit in Denver yesterday or 35* Celsius.

Welcome from Nevada.

Your parking/turn lights are mounted on the fenders instead. Jeep probably didn't want to go to the expense of making 2 different grilles.

Woah woah woah, parking lights are the SAME as indicators/turn signals? That's a new one on me, over here, parking lights use the red tail light for either side when you're stationary and you cock the indicator stalk for whichever side you want lit overnight etc. I've seen them used a couple of times in my whole life - we just don't use them in the UK, maybe those in EUR do as it seemed to come in with German manufacturers from the mid 90's to my recollection.

Ok, continuing a theme I started. I have water in the passenger foot well, would be your drivers side, but since everything's flipped in the engine bay it still holds true. Dried it out and its come back. Although there's no obvious coolant loss, and the moisture doesn't smell distinctive (been no rain - still enjoying scorching 22 degrees here!), everything says heater core.

Which leads me to...all of the heater core videos/guides show/describe a heating system in a box you can extract as per the photo I knicked from a 'for sale' ad. Mine attached for comparison. Switches in same location but controlling rods and vents in different place. Need to investigate the cause of the leak but looks like this one will be a bit of trial and error.

Have another question about some fluid leaks but got to dash at the moment!

It appears that you have air conditioning. Check the drain for the evaporator (your under dash unit). It should drain to outside the cab.

I think that’s the heater.

The YJ’s leakage on the floor could be due to a handful of issues

  • Cowl seam sealer cracked
  • Cowl drain tube blocked
  • Seal under windshield
  • HVAC
Unfortunately if it’s a heater core issue we won’t be able to assist much due to the unit you have, it’s either a really good aftermarket install or it was installed like that where your YJ was manufactured... but just looking at it and seeing how exposed it is, I would think it’s a whole lot easier to work on than ours.

Yeah, I looked at OP's #1 post. Engine pic shows no A/C compressor.
OP states no rain. What about car washes?
If negative on rain and car wash, the process of elimination points to a coolant leak. Have you checked what's in the cooling system? Is it just water or a 50/50 mix of water and anti-freeze?

As far as your plastic halves, have you found a Cherokee in your local salvage yards (breakers)? That might be a way to see how the parts fit and whatever else may be necessary to make them fit.
Perhaps a poster here with a Cherokee could take a pic of their setup to help Gaz9000 get this figured out.

I'm a step closer to the source of the moisture. Had a heavy burst of rain this afternoon and went out to find this...it was almost all sitting on the surface but some had soaked through. It's got to be coming from above?!

Looks like my previous report on definitely not rain related was not entirely accurate.

Got the paper towels lined up in case more comes and I can see where its coming in. No holes in the roof but there's nothing wet behind/under the dash or inside the door channels etc.

One to fix an eye on. Along with...
1) A stuck on 4wd light.
2) A bad leak from the transfer case output seal. Can source a part from RBS Handel in Germany
3) New fuel cap, sad cos the original was in it and the key I've got has 'Selma, Ala' stamped into it. Makes it seem more interesting than the one I'm bound to be shipped.
4) Outer window seals as they're badly split and rising upwards
5) Something not running quite right so looking at plugs & new injectors, you guys have so many alternatives and better availability than me! I've seen mention of Mustangs, Crown vic's (police cars in movies yeah?). Some work in some Wrangler and Cherokees of a certain age. But not all?!
Anyway, chances of me finding a supplier of them is slim! This outfit ship here, would they fit?

Luckymac - I'm definitely going to refresh the coolant regardless of the source of the leak. Just so I know what's in there. Again, chances of finding a breaker in these parts is slim, chances of finding vehicles from the US are almost zero. We just don't do American cars over here.

Sorry if I'm boring anyone or covering obvious things. Still trying to suss out what you use and what I have access to! Any comments are gratefully received.
