Here's a setup I made. It's stainless steel polished wire grid on 1/2" centers.

What did you attach the mounting studs to the grill with?

I've never seen it installed with screws like that, i sorta like the look.

This is stronger and more permanent than the sticky back pads and tie wraps. You can see the stainless steel screw heads in the final picture of the grill on the Jeep. The photo is not very good, but the final look is very clean and straight.

I just used 10-24 x 1 1/4" ss screws with washers and nylock nuts through the grill. Then washers and nylock nuts holding the mesh in place. Very easy to remove, clean and replace if needed.

It's function first for me and this will definitely stop a rock. After taking so many rocks to the windshield, I can see it was only a matter of time before the condenser takes a serious hit. This system has worked for years on my Samurai for keeping branches out of there too. It's good for the highway and for trails.
