In the old days it was said to change the factory oil after an initial 500 miles.
What do you guys do now with the newer Jeeps? Mine is a 2015 JKU. Thanks.. BTW I'm going full synthetic when I do change.

It give normal and severe service schedules. But I was wondering if anyone did an early one as preventive maintenance.

For my past 2 new vehicles (HEMI Challenger and JKUR) I did the initial oil change at about 2,000 miles and then every 6000-8000 after that. Never had an issue with any oil consumption.

IIRC, the Challenger did trigger an early oil change reminder for the first oil change, I don't know about the JK.

In the year that I have owned my 2014 JK I have changed the oil twice. The first time was at 1000 miles, and I switched to synthetic oil on that oil change. The second oil change was 2000 miles later, at 3000 miles. And I will change it at every 3000 miles from now on. I just turned over 3500 miles today.

Holy smokes, why are you changing the oil every 3,000 miles?! With synthetic?! Do you only drive 3,000 miles per year? If so then I can see that, but getting normal use that 3,000 mile interval is extreme, IMO.

Well, I've owned the Jeep for just short of 14 months now, and it turned over 3500 miles today. I can afford one oil change a year.

With dino oil 5000 is plenty soon enough. You can double that with synthetic.
+1

I did my first oil/filter change at 1,200 miles but only because it can't hurt...and it could possibly help.

After that I'll change my oil when the light comes on or about every 7,500 miles, whichever comes first.

The rest of the world changes their oil closer to every 10,000 miles, unlike us Americans who seem to have fallen for some masterful marketing/sales scheme.
I'm pretty sure our oil is the same as the rest of the world's oil that doesn't lose viscosity and lubricating properties after 5,000 miles.

All that said if you have the money, time and desire to change your oil more frequently then by all means have at it.

After all, it can't hurt...and it could possibly help.

See what I did there? :)

Yeah, like I said above, if that's how much you put on in a year then it's understandable. At that point it's not about the oil being used up but becoming contaminated with moisture, acids, fuel dilution, etc, due to not being driven often.

If you don't do this already then I would recommend getting out and driving for at least 30-45 minutes straight 1-2 times a month to get the oil up to temp and help boil off condensation, etc. It'll help in the long run if you mainly do short trips.

I bought my brand new JKU in April and did the first oil change with Penzoil Pure Platinum synthetic 5w20 in June with 1,300 miles. I really only did this to get on my 6 month oil and filter change schedule ASAP every 6th and 12th month of the year (just easy for me to remember that way). I only put about 7,000 miles on my Jeep per year. I rotate the 5 tires every oil change and I don't trust anyone but me to do any of this work.

Had the same question, as I just got a brand new Unlimited.
The owners manual doesn't say anything special about the 1st oil change.
I also plan on just change it right after 1000 miles, just for the peace of mind.

1,000 here. I changed engine, axles, transmission, and transfer case fluids. This was clearly overkill, but I did find that the factory overfilled both axles, under filled the manual transmission, and slightly overfilled the transfer case.

There is no logical reason to change the oil early. With that said, anywhere between 3 and 5 thousand would be ok. I did 4,000. just sayin.....

I too am on line for around 3,000 for the first oil change.

Does any one, or is there a way to reset the oil change light so after the first early oil change you can now go another approx 7500 miles till it lights up again?

I can't really see changing the oil early twice.

I did my first at 500 miles.

Yeah, overkill....but it made me feel slightly better (given all of the head issues back then, I was just being extra careful).
