I never understood how to calculate mpg on my jeep. Jeep says it's a 19 gal tank. I drive atleast 40 miles after gas symbol lits up and it takes only 16 gal when I refill. I have to get a small gas container and drive around until all the gas is used up.

So, usually I get around 240 miles ( driving 40 miles after the gas symbol lits up). Mine is a 06 6 cyl, almost stock, 31" duratracs on OEM wheels.

Curious how much others are getting in their TJs.

Sorry if there are other similar threads.

I always refuel at half a tank, which really isn't half a tank. It usually takes 6.5 gallons at that point and I get usually between 100-115 miles in town depending on how I drive. So to figure mpg I just divide the miles by the number of gallons, there is no need to drive it to empty to figure mileage.

My light comes on with about 5 gallons left in the tank. I can reach about 275 on a tank

Miles divided by gallons only works if you are on stock size tires with the stock speedo gear. If you install bigger tires, you need to add the % off back in, or change the speedo gear.

Many people throw big tires on and forget to account that there is now less tire revolutions per mile. So if you got 250 odo miles with 30's, you probably see closer to odo 240 now with 31's. 220 odo with 33s. MPG is the "roughly the same" if you factor in the size increase.

I can get 300 out of a tank if I really cut it close. Light comes on at 260ish at 1/4 tank but I usually refill before it gets that far. Somewhere around 15-16mpg.

Fuel Light comes on at 120 miles. I could probably make it 160 miles before running out of fuel. Hopefully 5.38s will help with the fuel mileage.

Hey! I was following the CT thread, but not much activity over there. Would love to come if there is a CT jeep meet up. I am a newbie to the TJ world and never been to offroading, though I am very interested to earn some stripes on my TJ with light trails.

I agree. I have 31s now. The speedo is off my 10%

X2....my light usually comes on with about 3 gallons left, and I don't typically push it much past the 260 mile mark on a tank of gas.

05, 4.0, 31" Grabber AT2 tires, 6 speed, 3.73 gears, 4 inch lift, I get 220-240 miles before the light comes on. 19 gallon tank, light comes on usually after 14.5 to 15 gallons used.

You don't need to get a small gas can and run it dry ... fill it up all the way and reset your odometer. Drive it like you normally would. At ~1/4 tank, fill it all the way up again. Take the miles on the odometer, divide by the gallons you put in and you'll get your mpg for that tank. (I'm assuming you already know this but putting it out there for those that don't) I fluctuate between doing that every tank and every few tanks.

For regular commutes I get ~15 mpg. Light comes on at ~225.

For road trips I get ~18 mpg. Rarely let the level get low enough for the light to come on but based on my calculations, I'd easily get well over 300 miles on a tank.

200-230 depending on highway driving vs sitting in DC traffic. 05 lj I6 auto, all stock at the moment.

good to know that fuel light comes on early as well. I've pushed it 30 miles past and was sweating it out on if I'd make it to a gas station. Always heard they came on with 2 gallons left.

Oh my. What's your setup right now?
35s, 4.88 gears, and the garbage 42rle. Installing a high pinion Dana 44 front axle this month so I can regear to 5.38 and hopefully be able to cruise on the highway at a more appropriate RPM. Trying to push 35" tires going 70 mph at 2200 RPM is a joke.
