I tried reading the largest tire on a stock jk sticky, but I was still very confused. I have a stock JK and have a chance to get some bfg ATs for cheap, but they are 12.5 inches wide. how much backspacing should the rim have to be able to fit this tire?

You certainly don't need a 2.5" spacer with 4" of backspacing. Unless you like tires sticking out like lowered Hondas.

A lot of 35" tires are 12.5" wide and run with 4.5 bs no problems at all.

AEV wheels are 5.2 bs and they say they are tested to run 35" tires with no rub with their wheels and lift.

I have 35" 17x9 wheels that are a tad more than 4.5bs and a 3.5" lift and no rubbing.

I am running 33/ 12.5 / 15. On a 2010 jk,
You will need 4.5" backspace, then you will not have any problems. Unless you go down to a 15" rim.
Then depending on the rim it could hit the break caliper in the front, but that's a different thread. Lol
