as I am beginning to research this, what is the best way to paint my YJ?

using a HVLP harbor freight sprayer, I dont even know the kinds of paint there are available.

Lol...I did mine for about $70. Roll on rustoleum. I would avoid black since it shows every imperfection. Red or white is going to be the easiest color to paint.

I painted a few cars before with a spray gun. I would order 1 quart of Duplicolor Paint Shop in whatever color you want, as well as 1 quart of clear coat. Obviously prime and sand first. Lay down your color, wet sand lightly then clear coat it. Wet sand the clear after it cures and then buff/polish. That's a very basic paint job, itll turn out as good as the effort that you put into it.

Btw Autozone has duplicolor paint shop. $28 a qt.

Find someone who knows how to paint to help you.

HF guns work, but they are feisty. Air pressure and viscosity is REALLY important.

If you want to learn by experimenting, start with a single stage enamel (no clear). A lot easier and cheaper.

Harber freight spray guns will work, definitely go HVLP. I would recommend you go to a automotive paint store and get there advice, compere prices and products.
I would not use a enamel go with a urethane much better product. After you do any necessary body work and sanding you should use a sealer before paint. If you are painting a solid color a single stage paint will be fine, metallic's are easer to get even with a base/clear.

The black is the sealer, I got a gal. of paint, reducer and hardner and a Quart of primer/sealer and hardner and some tape for $300 plenty to do a jeep.
Make sure and get a mixing sheet on the paint you get and follow the directions. It will tell you how to mix, what air pressure, how to apply and dry times.

A little over a year ago I began the work on my 87, it took a full year for mine to get done. Your results may vary (Ha).
A bit of it is in the YJ build thread ( search Acmenano).if you just want color, easy. If you want good, a little practice and advice from the pros really helps.
Get a old hood and practice on it, better to do that than learn to sand ( did I mention I really hate sanding).
The satisfaction part is great.

FYI, paint sticks for two reasons. Mechanical adhesion (sanding) and chemical adhesion.
The chemical adhesion is built into whatever paint you buy and the only control you have there is to MEASURE and follow the directions exactly.
As far as sanding goes, wet sanding and dry sanding are equally effective. Dry sanding is best if you are using a random orbit sander and wet sanding is easier if you're sanding by hand. A random orbit sander is best for the larger flat areas and hand sanding works easiest in the nooks and crannies that the random orbit sander can't get into.

DON'T LEAVE EVEN THE SMALLEST AREA WITH ANY GLOSS!!! If you don't get good mechanical adhesion even the best chemical adhesion will eventually fail (peel or chip).

When spraying, several thin coats will be less prone to run or sag than a few thick coats.
The thinner coats will produce less "orangepeel" than thicker coats.
I suggest several thin coats with the drying time between coats as found in the instructions. The last coat should be a bit wetter than the earlier coats to achieve a nicer gloss.

There's a whole lot more to painting than what I've stated above, but what I've stated is really, really important.

What's even more important than what I've said above is that paint (especially paint with a catalyzer) is hazardous to your lungs. You need a respirator with the proper filters. Not a 3M dust mask, but a real respirator. The paint store will have one. Prices vary, but the paint store will be able to recommend one based on the type of paint you're spraying.
Go to an automotive paint store, where body shops go. The clerk at your local auto parts store that sells car paint won't have the expertise to give you the information that you need.

For experimenting, I mentioned enamel. Cheaper while learning spray technique.

Some of you offered great advice, but it might be too much info at once, unless he has someone to walk him through it.

One other piece of advise If you do run into problems when you are spraying STOP do not try and fix it by adding more coats you will just make it worse. Let it dry, sand it back out and try again. It's really not as hard as it seems. Good prep (sanding, cleaning) = good paint.
Good luck and have fun, there is pride in ownership when you've done it yourself that you can't git by buying it or paying someone else to do it.

Everyone has give good advice. Practice on spare flat surfaces first.
Make sure you have good DRY air. Yup ou can not remove too much water from your air source. Drain your tank just before and your water traps. Also add a water and oil filter. Oil in your air will male it impossible to get good results.

All of this was perfect advice. thank you all. I visited a local auto paint shop and he couldn't have been more helpful. Sanded, sealed, used single stage polyurethane , a HF HVLP sprayer (the purple one) with a pressure regulator and water/oil filter. Had to wait for the right weather/temp.

About $300 in paint. It looks good at ten feet. Closer than that, well, I think if I had 2 or 3 more cars to paint I could get good at it. A better lit paint booth would help too.
