WARNING THIS IS LONG AND POINTLESS. DONT READ UNLESS YOU'RE BORED OR HAVE TIME TO KILL. i finally got around to getting my jeep back shipshape after october's YO wheeling. i had roasted my power steering pump and when it was puking fluid it bubbled the lower radiator hose. anyway, ive been putting it off and putting it off but finally HAD to fix it becasue we're heading down to the coast this weekend. soooo the night went like this

6:15 pm - head out to the garage, put some good tunes on the ol .mp3 player, take off shirt get started.
overall mood-optimistic, i'll be drinking beer and celebrating vicotry in an hour or so

6:30 pm - get pump out. i remember why i put it off. the bracketry holding this thing is nuts. theres now 20 bolts in a pile....and i realize i only needed to take of 6 or so
overall mood - still optimistic. maybe when i get done i'll work on that computer i've been supposed to fix for two weeks

6:35 pm - realize the pulley is pressed onto the pump....and my puller is in the toolbox out at my folks place. decide i will run up to the parts store, borrow their puller, return my core, buy some oil (might as well do an oil change, hell, this sucker will be doen in no time). realize the drain pan is full.....and theres like 6 gallons of oil in containers that needsx to be dumped. start pouring oil out of drain pan into containers and loading up the truck
overall mood - frustrated at having to go to the parts store

6:45 pm - finish cleaning up Exxon Valdez sized oil spill in garage from overflowing oil bottle. get in truck and leave
overall mood - greasy, smelling of oil, leaning towards surly

7:30 pm - get home from parts store, realize the guy that was so nice to press it off for me burred the inside of the pulley. no big deal, it'll press through.
overall mood - tired, wanting an adult beverage badly

8:30 pm - roommates get home and see me cussing in garage. they try to tiptoe to the front door but flying tools and thrown parts stop them. they start to help
overall mood - lots of cussing

8:45 pm. realize the reason the pulley wont go the last 1/4" is because the crappy bolt they give you to press it on with has let the nut jump a thread and i'm fighting IT instead of the pulley
overall mood- surly, but relieved to figure out the problem

9:00 pm - start putting pump back on

9:05 pm- take pump back off to use short bolts where they belong and long ones where they go

9:10 pm put pump back on

9:15 pm - take pump back off to see why bolt wont thread in. cant see messed up threads but put in a different one instead

9:20 pm put pump back on

9: 25 take pump back off to start bolt that goes under the pulley into bracket

9:30 pm - put pump back on
overall mood there are several holes in the wall and the neighbors are beginning to gather outside to see what the commotion is

9:40 pm - crawl underneath to attach high pressure line. get grease/sludge/dirt in eye. begin crying like little girl who just lost her barbie. tell roomamtes i hate them and instruct them to go home. they tell me they are home. i crawl into corner of garage and begin rocking in the fetal position

9:55 pm - roommates coax me out of corner by offering me liquor
overall mood reinvigorated by gin, like popeye with spinach

10:15 pm- add fluid, bleed pump. checks out fine-good as new!
overall mood tired, releived, yet hostile still

stay tuned for thursday evening....replace the lower radiator hose, flush system, check t-stat (again!)

sounds simple, no? thats what scares me. i have pulled transmissions in less time than it took me to do the power steering pump last night.....:D :flipoff:

Is removal of the shirt required when working on a Jeep?
Yes you better start doing it anytime you are working on or cleaning up your jeep. As a matter of fact you should do that even when you're just standing there looking at it. ;) :D ;)

Damn White, I hear you on this bro. I had a similar experience with changing out just one little Motor Mount. After 3 hours, the jack that broke on me and a bolt hanging half way out that I couldn't move either way I finally had to baby it to my buddies shop the next day to hit it with the air tools and a not broke ass jack.

Whitebuffalo..........thanx for a great read.........still ROFLMAO......have you ever heard of the women that goes to Jiffy Lube and spends $22.00 on an oil change.........and her husband that after wanting to do it himself.......gets a DWI in the process,,,,,,and ends up costing him $1,500 by the time he is finished. This is priceless, and had a great time reading this. Thanks for a good laugh, and sorry it went so south on you. Good to know it happens to others.!!!!!!!!

This cracked me up. Now I know what to expect if I ever try it. Uh wait a minute, it won't be me trying it.

tiny- take your shirt off. You don't have jugs so it really doesn't matter anyway.

ok....first of all, let me say, thanks for the sympathies everyone.

now....for the shirt thing. i have a select number of "garage clothes." i usually use them if im spending the day in the garage....welding...massive work, etc. now...i figured this would be a one hour job, and....i didnt want to ruin one of the few decent shirts i had. i have been accused of stealing clothes form hobos before, and even my work attire consists of patchwork jeans and denim shirts. so....YES...it was required :flipoff: :D

standby for tonights update.....

ok....so tonight i replaced the lower radiator hose. first off....it went WAY better than last night. i will also add....the shirt was left ON...becaue it was hella-freezing outside and the wind was blowing hurricane force.

interesting tidbit...this is the 3rd or 4th time i haveflushed this thing in the last couple years.....when i pulled the lower rad hose and reached in the radiator...i pulled CHUNKS of spring form the liner of the hose out. it had rusted through and let that stuff get everywhere. SO...i pulled the tstat, cleaned it, flushed the whole nine yards....we'll see how itdoes. i may look at replacing the radiator in the spring. despite running a 195 degree t-stat it seems to run in the 210 range. sometimes a little higher. makes me kinda nervous....but running with the failsafe stuck open...it tends to run rich and kinda load up at low speeds. which...given the fact that thats where it spends most of its time...can be a problem.

so....conclusion....tonight was MUCH better. tomorrow, im gonna change the oil (surely THAT will go well) and put my seat back in and it shoudl be good to go......
