My Jeep ran just fine after my offroad. I paid very very careful attention lol because I suspected I HAD to break "something" since it was so hard to believe a vehicle could drive over stuff like that and NOT break anything lol! But nada.

Then Wednesday night and Thursday they were redoing the parking lot where I live. I know folks in low-hanging vehicles had to scrape stuff (my Mustang would have given up its lower front spoiler for sure) because they had some pretty huge bumps you had to go over (like a 4-6 inch drop between the part being paved and the part already paved), holes and obstacles.

Whether coincidence or not I started getting my first noise on Thursday.:rant: So whether it was something in the parking lot or a late development of something I clunked off road last weekend that hid itself for almost a week - don't know. At first I thought maybe a tiny gravel rock from the parking lot had flown up in somewhere. It has not gotten any worse.

It is sort of a "click-creak-clunk" - not very loud. It is very brief (like a couple seconds), totally disappears and comes back at random. It is not a "metal on metal" sound. The Jeep does not run or "feel" any different (other than this random noise).

Appears to be originating somewhere near driver floor or whatever would be between there and under/forward of the radio console and does not seem to "travel". I do not get it at all when idling. It does not appear to coincide with the transmission shifting, applying brake, or giving it gas. I do not notice it at all at higher street speeds - though I suppose it is possible the engine sounds just happen to drown it out since it isn't very loud. It is most likely where the pavement is uneven. I do mostly hear it when I am decelerating easing up off the gas before applying brake which may just be coincidence (or that may just be when I am slow enough to catch it that the engine doesn't drown it out).

I suspect this is not what it is but the kind of sound I would suspect like from an old creaky shock perhaps or a lumpy old mattress lol for an idea. I don't think I can have an old creaky shock though with less than 4 months/3K?

As much as it pains me, I may pay the dealer a visit tomorrow and get it looked at.

I am suspecting since it is so random that something up under is loose or nudged out of place and "hung up" and I only hear it when it happens to hit whatever it "hangs" against. I looked up under and didn't see anything obviously out of place or hanging/scraping - but my mechanical skills are fairly nonexistent so take that for what it is worth.

I will report back hopefully tomorrow with an answer. I know if it was from something I did then well I will take my lumps. But if it is from a freaking parking lot I will be really pissed lol!

It's not something like a rock or some other debris caught up in the tread, is it? Although, that would be a more consistent noise. See if it still does it when coasting in neutral down a hill.

Def make it a habit to check bolt torque after wheeling. I've seem and heard of the factory bolts loosening. Especially the 2 front track bar bolts (125 ftlbs)

Your noise could be anything. There's a lot if rubber bushings and moving parts. Maybe grab some PB Blaster. Squirt around the shock and swaybar link bushings. These 2 seam to be the culprit for squeaks.

It could be your gas tank rubbing on the tub. Plastic gas tank rubbing on the metal tub makes a swearing sound or creaking sound. This can occur if you damaged the skid plate for the gas tank. It does not take much.

I have the squeak and I can recreate it by pushing on the gas tank from the side or from the tub drain plug. I first thought mine was coming from behind the dash, because it seems to be coming from there.

Check all your control arms, upper and lower. I just found mine, it was the upper front shocks. They were loose where you could turn them with your hands with virtually no force at all. Tightened up noise gone. My noise was very intermittent and was a clunk when accelerating or braking at low speeds. A friend of mine had a similar sound and it was the driver side upper rear control arm....was a bit loose.

Taking it off road breaks in the suspension saying that means that things are moving for the first time and bolts will stretch for the first time. That's why you should re torque after the first hundred to thousand miles and after going off road.

...with your parking lot re-pave...might be a pavement debris tossed up between frame and tub too...and sticking there because of the asphalt...

...hey did you hear the one about the dummy that thought asphalt was rectum trouble?

I ran it down a little hill in neutral a few times, then did it in regular drive as a control study (must be scientific!). (Here in the valley we really don't have things that qualify as "big hills" other than parking garages, freeway ramps and a few other random places lol!). Same randomness in either neutral or drive - made no difference, sometimes made the noise, sometimes didn't regardless.

I dug a few tiny rocks out of the tires (pet peeve lol!) but nothing really there other than well dirt as it should be. Didn't change the noise.

I don't think it is the gas skid as while I know very little about mechanics, I do know my gas tank is not in or just forward of the driver's compartment which is where the noise seems to come from. Like just under/forward of the gas pedal. I looked at the gas skid and other than a few little scratches does not appear bent or misshapen.

I don't know how all the pedals and stuff work or what connects the gas pedal to whatever else it links to to make it move - but is this "whatever else" something that has tension in it? Ie apply the pedal=tension, let off the pedal=release tension? It is almost as if when the tension is released (taking foot off gas pedal and not braking) it is sporadically clunking against something. I have no idea what the whole assembly looks like or really what I am talking about lol! But it did it in neutral coasting too so probably not this?

Going to start making some calls in a few to see if someone can fit me in to look at it.

RoadGlide I suspect debris is a possibility and not going to go there on the rectum thing quite this early in the morning LOL!

Probalby not it since you don't have a lift yet... but look to see if the hose clamp on the front drive shaft boot is still on correctly... it's possiible that it got hit by a rock and has now fallen off and isn't on properly... it would come and go and would make that sound...
I know it happen on my first Jeep...

Update: I had a shop look at it. Passenger sway bar something just needed tightened. They didnt even charge me! Obviously these guys know Jeeps because took less than 5 minutes. Interesting that I could have sworn it was drivers side or right in front of console (to right of gas pedal) unless the end that needed tightened was in the center? All happy! And they didnt even charge me. It wouldve taken the dealer 4 hours and cost me no less than $200 for the same thing no doubt.

Truth! Actually I think all the folks here had some great ideas based on my fairly unmechanical description.

At least now if I ever hear that noise again, I know the first suspect! And what makes me most happy is finding a shop that could see me same day and did not jerk me around and knew enough to pretty immediately figure it out.

It seems like you've found a good shop. Some of those guys will take advantage of you. It seems like you've got a keeper in that shop.
