i was replacing the u-joints, wheel bearing, and ball joint on my 91 6cyl (d30). i was told that i need to pull the seals out of the axle tube after pulling the axle shaft out. how do i get these seals out? how many seals are there on the right and left side? please please please help me. i've got everything taken apart and am at a standstill, need to get back together and working asap

2 seals in the front diff. You have to pull the case to get the seals out. Which usually requires a seal puller. If you've never taken a case out of a housing I'd strongly suggest you have an extra set of hands. If you ditch the shims you will be searching for someone to setup your gears again :)

well on the drivers side of the axle, i already got some sort of seal to come out from the end of the tube. it looks like a spring that has been made into a complete loop. and i can see a ruber seal of some sort but it is behind what seams to be a metal bushing or something. do you know what i'm talkin about?

I found a good picture of where the seal goes.



See the rtv in there?? That's where the inner axle seals are. I'm not 100% sure on the configuration of the disco yj axles.

me or dad have never messed with anything in the differentials. should i just get some1 to do this for me? also, do you know what the spring like seal thingy is that i'm talkin about is?

so i just pull the front diff cover and can pull that seal out? is there anything i have to pull out of the diff first?

wow. amazing right up. thanks for finding me that lost:) the one from stu is exactly what i need.

how hard is it to make sure the shims are re-installed correctly?

You NEED to make sure you put the shims and the bearing caps back in on the EXACT side they came from. If you don't then your backlash will be off and it can chew up your ring and pinion.

so just make sure everything goes in exaclty how and where it came out?
Yup, best way is to put a mark on your housing and your cap and then do it on a different spot for the other side. When you go to put it back together then just line up the marks again.

10-4, i'll probably have some more questions once i get back into it. cant for now though. weather aint so good down here

No worries, bro it's okay. When you are doing anything with your R&P it's worth taking your time and doing it right. Much cheaper that way. :D

thanks for all the help so far fella's. the front axle rebuild is goin great. i got another question. on the vaccuum shift motor thing on my axle. i pulled the shift motor housing and fork out. there is a seal on the right side of the shift motor (looking from back of jeep to front). how does this seal come out? should it be "poked" from the end of the axle into the shoft motor housing? or should it be pulled out of the end of the axle tube? also, there is a bushing of some sort on the other side of the shift motor, how does it come out?
